Bar Closures in Phnom Penh Over COVID-19?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! Not true.

On 136 there are maybe 3-4 bars pulling the trick of switching of the outside lights while people are inside, but most of the bars on 136 are closed. On 130 it's the same.

I think premises with “al fresco” spaces and/or open fronts have an advantage. Last night many outlets on 278/282/288 received a visit by the authorities telling them to close from tomorrow, while for some reason SCORE for example got off the hook.

Saw 136 and 51 last night.

136: Most of the bars had their shutters down. I saw a bar with their doors open but with no light in the signs. Several locals including a girl I know were drinking in front. The girl invited me in for a drink but I declined not being in the mood. Not sure if they are operating or closed with their doors open.

51: Just passed by, but somewhat seemed business as usual. Girly bars had their lights on, and some places in pub-street seemed also open.

Sisowath quay also seemed very dark, with many places closed.
A tuk-tuk driver told me that bars will be closed for some three months, but don't know this is true.
Three months seem quite enough to have all bars bankrupt.

As you say, people who don't have a kitchen still need to eat. A lot of foreigners in Phnom Penh live in hotel rooms with no kitchen and rely on restaurants for food. If the authorities want to stop people gathering in closed spaces, then it could be take-away food and you wait outside, or restaurants could deliver food to your room.

And seriously, you can not compare Cambodia to NY, SF, or LA, on any subject at all. Ever.
They're not keeping restaurants open for foreigners. A lot of locals live in tiny rooms without kitchens too.
Of course, but I was refering to PR's question about why the authorities would close (foreigner) bars and not the restaurants.

In any case, if there is no work in the cities, then a lot of Cambodians will go back to their villages. Then more places will close, and so on. With Khmer NY coming up, out of work people will leave earlier for the provinces. This is the sort of mass migration that spreads viruses unfortunately. There is a predictable shit-fest coming up, with the virus starting to spread among the Cambodian population right before the Khmer New Year. Just like in China.
You don't need to be a fortune-teller to see the future. :(
Some of this in PP reminds of what I experienced during Pchum Ben. Most khmer go to their provinces. Is any of this similar? Many bars were closed.

i understand 'poor' people can have a 3 month holiday on loan payments
they should at the same time suspend deposit interest payments
and there ought to be some similar accommodation for rent

but globally, the interventions required will expose the ridiculous financial system, especially in the usa
not a penny spare for healthcare, schools, welfare, etc
yet $trillions from thin air to help big business
or rather their shareholders

.
