I would say when people put on uniforms they turn into arseholes.
Money just makes bigger arseholes out of already-arseholes

it still amazes me how people still continue to use newspaper media as facts when in fact it is biased propoganda...lakesidejunkie wrote:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/trave ... miles.htmlphuketrichard wrote:lakesidejunkie wrote:but when people get money they tend to turn into assholes ,u have to agree with me there.

Re: Bangkok vs Phnom Penh
Hmmm apart from the stupid daily mail title addition about Thailand being the "most dangerous country in da world" the article is mainly quotes from a book. And I have to say I find the article quite accurate.Jamie_Lambo wrote:it still amazes me how people still continue to use newspaper media as facts when in fact it is biased propoganda...lakesidejunkie wrote:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/trave ... miles.htmlphuketrichard wrote:lakesidejunkie wrote:but when people get money they tend to turn into assholes ,u have to agree with me there.

I have been going to Thailand regularly for more than 20 years. On my first trip, following a self induced paranoia (from an older than me non payable gf; only induced from my lack of language understanding skills), I found myself being chased by motorbikes gangs in the mountain road going from Chiangmai to Pai while going there in the nighttime. All my fault but with a lucky ending).
One my third trip, drunk as fuck and having crashed my bike, I lost an expensive Swiss watch in koh Samui. I ended up staying longer than anticipated and buying it back from the island top mafia after partaking extensively for that result with the corrupt night life underworld and police.
By that time I was convinced I would live in Thailand. Myanmar was also an option but the lack of westernized goodies was a draw back.
On my third trip, I luckily made it to Cambodia and was immediately hooked by the people gentleness, never thinking twice about Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, India and other asian countries I had visited before.
As I made Cambodia my permanent home, I was still loving Thailand very much and stayed there many weeks every time I was due back to Europe. However it was always clear that I much preferred Cambodia as a home and It took another 10 years for me to understand my underlying preference.
Nowadays I can't spend more than 2 weeks in Thailand. Sooner than later, thais start to hit on my nerves and bad situations arise on a daily basis be it day or night time, sober or drunk. I never experience this kind of situation here and in the rare case I am confronted to one, I can usually defuse it.
My belief which I think is supported by historical scholars studies, is that Cambodians are like a sponge; taking as much off foreign/foreigners input without much pre-conceive resentment, whereas thais are self centered morons very much persuaded to be above everyone else.
Don't get me wrong I still appreciate many aspect of their culture, especially their artistic qualities, how they manage overall to keep their immediate environments tidy and beautiful, their modernness etc... However I do pity expats living there who in their overwhelming majority can't see beyond the artificial front decorum (in that regards Pukhet Richards that sounds very self aware must feel very lonely).
I never heard any thais speak about a particular farang as khmer do with their "barang yeung" (don't touch him he is our barang motherfucker ! )

i do agree though that the thais are not as friendly and accepting as the khmers, unless your friends with the thais, then i dont notice that much difference, but there can be a difference if you are a stranger, its been a while since ive spent more than a couple of weeks there now so my views are probably not as strong anymore, because i remember at one point, my views of thailand were pretty negative similar to some expressed lol
but there are far worse places to go, most trouble is brought on by the victims themselves, if the tourists stick to the tourist places and keep their nose clean its rare they would encounter any trouble

Re: Bangkok vs Phnom Penh
you dont know me an dont know thai's and i dont need ur fucking pity, been here over 30 years an raised, a wonderful daughter here.
i have many thai friends that would and have, stuck up for me over other thai's and gone to bat for me numerous times and many of my Farang friends have good thai friends as well.
I do agree not all thai's give a shit
Had a thai partner ( ex border patrol on the Cambodian border in 87-88) and he told me Never to trust him as thai's dont trust each other.
There good ones and bad ones, same same as everywhere
