What would you advise them to do if they need money for big medical expenses?

If she only started feeling unwell after her return from Cambodia, it's possible she was infected in Australia, no?

The woman's friends are looking into suing the doctor. That seems a trifle unfair to me. In that case, western doctors should prescribe anti-malarials to all travelers to Cambodia just to avoid being sued.
The doctor's advice was probably sound enough for most travelers, and if she was using spray and mosquito nets she SHOULD have been ok. Ms Hill only came to Cambodia for a one week stay, so she was extremely unlucky to contract a particularly dangerous form of malaria in such a short time. Many foreigners live here for years without taking drugs.
I wish her a good recovery, but it seems to me to be one of those things that can happen 1% of the time and that's life. You will never be protected against everything.
A group of close friends, including Ms Wilson, are sitting by Ms Hill’s hospital bedside. They launched a GoFundMe campaign two days ago to raise money for Ms Hill’s massive medical costs as she faces an uncertain outlook.

The eastern Mondulkiri region of Cambodia, where Ms Hill visited, is at significant risk of malaria. While no antimalarial medication is 100 per cent effective, a properly prescribed drug may have prevented her extremely serious illness.

Ms Wilson said she believed her friend received bad medical advice.
“I have engaged a solicitor to assist in any possible legal action,” she said.

“She was infected with the most fatal form of malaria with a 50 per cent mortality rate.”

Doesn't Australia have universal healthcare? Serious question.

Good question. I thought they did too. AFAIK the woman is Australian, residing in Australia, and she came to Cambodia for a week. It's not like she's an expat seeking medical care in Australia.

We do. That doesn't mean everything is free. It just means that stuff like breaking your arm or giving birth doesn't have to cost $90,000 like it might in the US if you don't have private health insurance.

It doesn't cover everything, either. Dental isn't covered by Medicare at all, for example.

There's usually a base amount covered by Medicare and then a contribution that the patient need to pay. Plus, many drugs that might be used in the treatment and rehabilitation that aren't covered by the pharmaceutical benefits scheme.

They talk about amputation and rehabilitation in the GoFundMe, which can be fundamentally life changing so I'd guess the donations would largely cover her recovery over quite a long period of time.

Shelley recently travelled to Cambodia to work as a volunteer at an elephant sanctuary for abused elephants.

I'm more worried about these abused elephants to worry about Shelley health problems atm.
Anyone with info on abused elephants please contact me.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Thanks for the reply. Would the friends be thinking of suing the doctor to get his insurance to pay hospital costs then ? It sounds awfully like the US health system.

Again, the case would be predicated on the assumption that she was infected in Cambodia, and that the GP's advice was negligent.

How could she prove that, especially the former?

They have mosquitoes in Australia, yes?

There are mosquitoes, but Australia has been declared malaria-free by WHO. Nevertheless, I believe a few cases of transmission have been reported in the far north of Australia. I'm not sure where this Shelley woman lives.
