I know a young lady late 20s. He mother died soon after child birth. Her father didn't want to/couldn't care for her so he put her in an orphanage. She was a very bright child and studied hard at high school such that she won a scholarship to go to uni. She decided to do medicine and become a doctor. She did well at uni and after had to do an internship at a hospital. She encountered a lot of sexist discrimination from the male doctors there who believed a woman should not become a doctor. Nevertheless, she persevered and graduated. She also got to travel to places like Japan, Korea and Thailand as part of professional fellowship programs. I daresay that opened her eyes even more..beyond the traditional Cambodian view of things.

Her father who had not been involved in her upbringing at all, got wind that she'd become a doctor and suddenly wanted to reconnect with her. And before long was asking for money.. The poor girl was torn between thinking he abandoned me and I don't know him and some traditional sense of 'duty' to her father... I dunno whether she ended up supporting him but I heard she went on to do more study to become a specialist.
