You've been taking too much notice of that appalling snob and crashing bore Lord Fatso.vladimir wrote:From the picture, I'd say it's pretty certain he was/is a teacher.
I try to avoid the term 'TEFLer' myself, I feel it has acquired negative connotations due to one-upmanshippers.
Back on topic, It'd be interesting to do a demo-graphical study of English language teachers in PP to explore how much their profile has changed over the last decade or so. For example, the guy in the picture above would be a very typical example of a PP-based English teacher a decade or so ago. Back then, probably a majority fit in that demographic segment. However, I was in a bar not long ago and about twenty TEFL-ers marched in for someone's leaving party and (broadly) they didn't fit that profile at all. In general, they were younger, fresher faced, more women etc etc. My guess is things are changing somewhat. Thoughts?

Thoughts? Well, first off, the world is a lot smaller in 2014 vs 2004 thanks to a massive push in global IT. So yeah, younger and fresher faced people make their way to "rough" places like Cambodia, and eventually change things.
As far as the women go... Shit, why don't you tell us? I think it would have to do with a rise in kindergarten and pre-k schools in Phnom Penh who obviously want females as teachers.

Good point. There are probably many reasons. I'd suggest:Sir_Quality_U_Feel wrote:Thoughts? Well, first off, the world is a lot smaller in 2014 vs 2004 thanks to a massive push in global IT. 1) It's pretty shit these days to be young (20s) in the UK, for example there are plenty of people around with degrees who can't find decent jobs or buy a place to live because property prices have gone berserk. So the temptation to travel must be higher.
2) Cambodia is perceived as a safer, 'trendier' place to live for younger less grizzled types. This impacts especially on young women.
3) There's less here now for the previous older demographic - for instance everything is more expensive, they as people are less desirable hires, the paid-for-sex scene (a previous pole of attraction for that demographic) isn't what it once was etc etc.

Re: ATTENTION CEO COMMUNITY!!! HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?
The influx started jumping about 5 years ago, during the recession in the US and Europe. A whole crowd of bankers/estate agents/people with unpaid mortgages suddenly found themselves out of jobs and with limited cash.SE was a cheap fix, and they had degrees unrelated to teaching, but most schools don't care/don't know. This was mostly the older crowd.
Then about 4 years ago, a several schools started doing external hires for kindergartens (young white females, not many in Cambodia at that time)
They came, told their friends, and whammo.
That and the job situation in Europe and the US for young graduates.

Back on topic- Did your friend come back from GSM yet, OP?
Gen Mack is right. I've had 2 day benders down at GSM where I turn my mobile off and show back up Sunday Morning. Then I spend the next few days in exile/ damage control mode, listening to stories from friends and co-workers about how they "saw" me out the other night. Fuck. Double Fuck.
Phnom Penh can be small as tits. I hope your friend is okay. I'd wager he is fine.

He has been unemployed for a while, but we used to work for the same school.keeping_it_riel wrote:And how exactly would that be possible?Jacket wrote:Note: This is an old picture. It is likely that he looks a lot rougher now than when this picture was taken.
Is he by any chance a TEFL-er? If so, do you know where he's working? That could be helpful for your search.

It is only Saturday afternoon here. If you don't hear from him by Sunday night our time.... then I'd begin to worry a little. I am sure he is sleeping it off until tomorrow morning right about now. Probably has a story to tell, if he remembers.Jacket wrote:he hasn't turned up yetSir_Quality_U_Feel wrote:Back on topic- Did your friend come back from GSM yet, OP?

For the record, I want to be "missing" for 2 weeks before any of my friends feel the need to post my pic telling everyone the last time they saw me I was headed to Golden Sorya Mall.

vladimir... are you saying, that top-paid (wall street) material lost their job and went to Cambodia as a tefler?
