ATM USD or local currency (Cambodian Riel)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

You can use your card to get USD inside the bank. Costs slightly more than the atm. That way you can check the notes in front of the staff.

Can change big notes eg 100s at moneychangers. If you ask for $70 in USD and $30 in riel

Is Riel pegged to USD? Or is the currency really that stable?
It's been the same rate for about 20 years, it does fluctuate a bit but somehow the central bank adjusts it to a stable level.

The Riel still isn't internationally traded so yes, it's pegged to the dollar. You can't take Riel to another country. Surprisingly, for me anyway, you can change VND although it has to be bigger than 50,000.

You can take as much riel to another country as you want. Unfortunately it is only good for ass wipe.

When you withdraw from an ATM does it ask you if you want USD or Local currency and if so what is the best to withdraw in terms of currency conversion rates?

7/11 has been trying a long time, but hasn't been allowed. If they come to Cambodia they will wipe out all local mini marts in no time.
