Asiandating.com are sly pricks.

Post by Kung-fu Hillbilly »

I've recently renewed my asiandating.com membership after it being dormant for while to find them having become sneaky pricks. The default setting for membership renewal is automatic, your money taken from your bank account automatically when your current membership expires. There is a button to disengage the automatic membership but I noticed the other day if you wait a few seconds after you hit it, it slides back to the original default position of automatic renewal - the time passing between the two events just slightly longer than it would take you to leave the page.

I sat there continually hitting the button to disengage the automatic renewal and watched it time and again slide back to its default before firing off a snarky email to them letting them know what I thought about their tactics and that I wouldn't be using their service again after my current membership expires. They replied saying that I would also actually have to engage in one more step to confirm I didn't want to automatically renew - yet another deception after you believe you've done enough to stop any further payments.

I looked at my asiandating.com account to see (somewhat embarrassingly) that I've spent more than $500 with them over recent years. I'm amazed they believe deceiving members as they are will work in their favor in any way shape or form - it really is incredulous to me that they don;'t think this type of practice isn't going to piss everyone off.

Rant over. As you were.

Seven or eight premium/platinum memberships over the last ten years I guess. I have found AD to be a great place for meeting Asian women from all socio economic pedigrees resulting in three relationships and a considerable amount of *cough* shenanigans.

I'm not judging at all, :thumb: 3 relationships resulting from it seems worth it to me, well done. Seems pretty fucked how the renewals work though. I'd report them to the Better Business Bureau or whatever the Aussie equivalent is.

The twisted soul in me is thinking of the shenanigans, myself and 3 of my closest Le Cyrcee friends could get up to for the better part of an entire weekend for $500. ;-)

What does a gold or platinum membership give you? A lot of memberships work that way though (think back at magazine subscriptions, VPNs etc). Annoying as hell for sure.

I don't remember all the benefits but Gold membership gives you the ability to message people which is kind of handy on an internet introduction/dating site. Platinum membership offers a larger sized ad as well as that ad being promoted at the top the page. Language translation is also part of Platinum.

The main reason to purchase a Platinum membership is to indicate you're serious about meeting people by spending a little more to do that. I guess some might suggest there's a sort of status associated with spending a couple of dollars more on a Platinum membership - we all know asian women hate any sort of social status.

I must admit I have been a member there on and off since March 2006.
I just checked my account and I was sure that I had changed the setting to no auto renewal but it was back on

That's messed up. I bet they've made millions on this sham, as no doubt it's more widespread than just you two.

I also got a charge from one of those dating apps that I was sure I cancelled. Might have been Badoo years ago. They didn't help with a refund, and I went ahead and canceled it through PayPal so that they didn't even have a chance to do it again.

I don't get why anyone would spend money on an "Asian dating" site. Or is it just to pass the time waiting until you can return to Asia, wanking?

I can think of a few reasons why people would spend money on dating site membership, not least the volume of prospective partners/dates you're able to qualify over a short amount of time. I mostly use them when I'm back in the west waiting to get back as I am now.
