Armed Thugs Drug & Rob Australian Tourist in Phnom Penh; Victim Puts Photos of Thieves on Reddit
An Ozzie known as SlippinJimmyRoggs is claiming on [url=phone_and_camera_stolen_pictures_of_the_thugs]Reddit Cambodia that he was robbed by a bunch of thugs with the help of a friendly Tuk-Tuk driver who drugged him and then took his phone and camera, but left him with his wallet, as it was empty.
The thieves have apparently been using his smartphone to take pics of themselves with guns and shooting bazookas, which have all been automatically uploaded to his gmail account, unbeknownst to the thugs.
The interesting part is that the uploaded pics include a picture of a Barang, who appears to have an open phone box on his lap. SlippinJimmyRoggs has warned everyone to stay away from these thieving "thugs" and report them to authorities. If the Barang is an expat, surely someone knows him an will recognize him.
There also appears to be a phone number on the side of a box in one of the photos. Who's gonna call it and see if they can find out where that is Gav?
Here are some of the pics he's managed to get and also his comments about the story:
"Recognise any of these people? If you do. Avoid and report to the authorities. Poor kids.
Phone was a silver Meigoo S8.
Camera was a white Sony compact digital camera.
These are the people that give Cambodia a bad name.
I have photos of $100 bills among other things probably from drugs and pawning my camera.
I can recall meeting them with a tuk tuk driver who I called and he denied all responsibility. Then had a drink with them which was presumably spiked. Didnt take my wallet because there was nothing in there.
Also a short video of a girl blowing out a birthday cake which is a strange mixture of cute and sadness, knowing she may be raised to be a thief.
The idiot uploaded a bunch of photos using my stolen phone. Didn't realise it backed up to my spare gmail account.
Changed passwords now but have photos of him and his friends, using bazookas and assault rifles, his daily thefts ($100 bills) and a few poor kids under his care which will probably be raised poorly and to be criminals like hiself.
If you're a tourist all they see is $$$ in you and good target to steal from.
I didn't have the best time but I would avoid the capital because of these types. Late at night you get gunfire around the airport.
I'm just lucky the guy didn't knife me so I have that going for me. Be careful who you trust stick to expats and tourists. Most of the locals are nice enough but there's a lot of rotten apples in phnom penh."

This bit leads me to believe the OP is on meth or in a time warp from 1993 or something. I pulled him up on this a few days ago and these were his replies:Late at night you get gunfire around the airport.
Ok I've confirmed this from Facebook videos from people in the area, more reliable than the government news. People become their own reporters when the state fails to report.
...........
Have you been there in the early hours? I cannot say for certain as this was told to me by someone that's been living there for 5 years. The local media is government controlled so it wouldn't be reported.

Haha, I used to live near Wat Phnom, and I woke up to gunfire once. Ran down to see they had caught a bag snatcher who feel off the getaway moto or something. I was even offered the chance to take a few wacks at him before the police arrived.John Bingham wrote:This bit leads me to believe the OP is on meth or in a time warp from 1993 or something.Late at night you get gunfire around the airport.

Cops used to fire 3 shots in the air as a sort of call for backup, but the days of guys firing at rain-clouds are well gone. Of course you might hear the odd few shots fired, but it's not common anymore and there are often stories of cops/soldiers getting arrested for drunkenly firing weapons.
