There was this argument about the red cross a while back:

From an international copyright law perspective, emblems of pure geometrical design, such as the Swiss flag or Red Cross, are not legally protected [8,9]. Only works defined as “creative art“ can be copyrighted, and an artwork must be sufficiently original to be eligible for copyright [8,9]. Cool. I will be going forward with my case against Malaysia then.

The Singaporeans are next on my list. It's as if someone told them, "ok, you have 30 seconds to create your national flag. Here's a few scraps from an American flag to get you started. GO!"
