Are National Flags Copyrighted?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Liberia is similar:

But considering it was founded by freed American slaves, they get a pass.

There was this argument about the red cross a while back:

From an international copyright law perspective, emblems of pure geometrical design, such as the Swiss flag or Red Cross, are not legally protected [8,9]. Only works defined as “creative art“ can be copyrighted, and an artwork must be sufficiently original to be eligible for copyright [8,9]. Common geometric forms are precluded from this definition.http://www.pssjournal.com/content/7/1/13

Cool. I will be going forward with my case against Malaysia then.

The Singaporeans are next on my list. It's as if someone told them, "ok, you have 30 seconds to create your national flag. Here's a few scraps from an American flag to get you started. GO!"

That one looks more like it was inspired by the Turkish rather than the US flag if you ask me...

Fine then. Those fuckers get a pass because I'm in a good mood. But Malaysia is still on my shit-list.

After your successful law suit, you can move on to Australia and New Zealand. Good luck.
