Are Expats in Cambodia Binge Drinking Enough?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

C'mon...drinking prowess has been a definer of manliness for what? Millennium? I didn't project anything - read all the boasts of how much people can drink in one sitting. It is the way it is and will always be. I can lampoon it if I want - why not? It's patently silly...

It's not all boasts, it's discussion. Your predefined bias makes you read it in the tone of boasting. And even boasting has nothing to do with manliness.

Nor does drinking prowess... I know a lovely Russian gal who can drink most of us under the table. I wouldn't even think of calling her "manly" for it. Perhaps you should see a therapist for your insecurities relating to perceived manliness instead of taking it out on everyone else.

While there just might be (few, if any) families of 4 out at 3 am., it is (apparently) OK in the hardcore "real man" drinker's milieu to wipe out just 1 or 2 regular people. As they deserve such a fate by dare driving at that hour (obviously).

Driving drunk is a crime (waiting to happen) against other people. It is selfish, senseless and idiotic. Period. Double Period.

Offenders should be tarred and feathered and then castrated and then chained to a urinal for a fortnight. But since they are probably dedicated enthusiastic alcoholics (hence having the lack of judgement not to drive drunk) it will have little to no effect. So they should simply be executed, before they kill some hapless innocent soul driving at 3 am.

Or maybe Stroppy could get creative and start a new NGO - "Bingeing for Christ". Hmmm...
Well reverend dagenham, because you ARE preaching right now instead of discussing, I only pointed out a flaw in your argument. The same flaw that has you using western traffic statistics to talk about actions here. What about drunk walkers? Considering the lack of sidewalks and the local expectation that everyone else will do the "watching out", isn't someone with poor judgement walking in the street likely to step in front of a moto and kill that same family of 4? Shouldn't you be going for full prohibition?

And what about texting drivers? Which do you think impairs reaction time more? 3 beers or sending an SMS? Note: I mean 3 beers on an average person... because everyone has different tolerance levels and while some may get completely smashed at 3 beers others may not even have a buz. Of course all of your statistics will disregard that because they use BAC as a measure...
You surprise me, OD. Really. A classic nonsensical drunk's defense. Am I preaching here? You bet! Against drunk driving, not drinking to get drunk. There is a major difference. Hello?

You pick obvious red herrings like walking and texting (yes, they do cause accidents of course) to deflect the real issue here - drinking copious amounts of alcohol impairs motor functions and general judgement. Fact. From any angle.

Then you pick another classic red herring (really now?) which is that differing amounts of booze effect people differently. Weak. OK, that's obvious as well. 10-15 drinks in a 2-3 hour period will impair any human being on earth to a measurable degree. Can we take that as a given? Or no? Will you counter that there are 3 Finns who can drink 45 drinks in an hour and drive f-1 cars perfectly? OK.

Alcohol is your religion. It's exactly like talking to Stroppy about Christianity. You both fall back on your "faith". Brother, I don't care if you drink 2 bottles of vodka a day. The issue here is driving whilst drunk. And you seemingly will defend this practice to your death with suspect arguments...because it is intrinsically tied with getting drunk when not at home. Hence = defense of driving home drunk.
You'll notice I used 3 drinks in my examples... while you jumped to 10-15. Who's picking red herrings now?
And I didn't disagree that alcohol impairs judgement and impedes driving ability... only that it was exclusive in that regard and something to be specifically targeted at the exclusion of other equally impaired actions. It's sad you're so wrapped up in your religious fervor about it that you're unable to see the difference there and snap automatically to defensive mode.

Dear OD, religious fervor for the bottle is what is driving your defense strategy...obviously...we are both guilty as charged...

Not really. I don't care if someone drinks or not... or if I do or not for that matter. You'll see me in my favorite bar on many an evening having orange juice or earl gray tea. Your full of assumptions, and most of them are dead wrong.

What I do care about is someone trying to bring the "nannyness" of the places we all left, often because of it, here with them. Grow up and mind your own business, and let others mind theirs.

Call that "libertarian rhetoric" or whatever you like... I call it common sense. If someone does something wrong to someone else, punish them for it. But no minority report precrime judgements, and let grown adults make grown adult decisions without you trying to be their mother.

This. In defense of fleeing "nannyness" - defined as allowing drunks the "right" to decide to drive drunk. If you or your wife ever gets injured by a "Liberated" drunk driver will your little "personal freedom at all expense" tune change?

He "chose" to get massively drunk at a bar so he can "choose" to drive drunk. It's his "right" after all! It's his business, so you can fuck off and if you or your loved ones get injured so fucking what? That's life...for the true "Libertarian"...

It aint about drinking as I have stated several times, it is about driving drunk...

It is just fun to get Dagenham all wound up over the same subject over and over again. I think I have driven my moto drunk about 3-5 times in the past 15 months. All at 2-4 AM. Streets were empty.

of course driving drunk is stupid and not a good choice. If I ever felt too fucked up, I would always just park the moto and take a motodop/tuk tuk home.

I don't think Dagenham is against drinking, as he said. Shit, most the posts he makes on here and K440 I assumed were always under the influence of alcohol. Or maybe he is just that unbalanced.

Me drunk at 4 AM driving has NOTHING compared to the dangers that the typical Khmer freshie boys put people in all day, everyday. Not trying to justify anything, just some perspective. BRB, gotta get another beer.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

I agree about drunk driving, and so do most sensible people.

I've driven drunk before, and I'm the first to admit it was totally wrong and plain stupid. In a city like Phnom Penh, where there is 24/7 cheap alternative transport available, why would you do it?

Because you're an idiot at that point in time, no other answer.

Kill yourself by all means, just don't involve innocent people.

I fail to understand how one can rage against a khmer guy who drove over two people and put a range Rover through a wall, and in the same breath defend his choice to drive drunk.

Define hypocrisy...

And there IS such a thing as too much freedom. Loads of dead expats from bad drugs prove that.
Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right? ;)
