Apsara Authority Yells at Barang Chick in Angkor Wat (VID)

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Siem Reap, Cambodia: A western lady was told to stop doing stone rubbings of the temple walls by an angry Apsara Authority staff member.

The foreigner seemed to speak a little Cambodian/Khmer language. They fight over her previous papers a bit before the foreigner reluctantly hands them over.

Don't fucking rub the statues... Simple enough. Then again, they should also be yelling at 98% of the Khmer visitors...

Yeah, the vendors outside the gate who sell rubbings and kick back to the temple attendants hate the competition.

The rubbings that are on sale are not made from actual temple carvings but are mass produced using replicas of temple carvings.

As for the video, the security person was right to stop her. It's against the rules to touch the carvings. The foreigner should have known that. It would seem obvious even if she didn't know the specific rules, and was a stupid thing to do. But I do not understand what the reason was or on what rule or authority security confiscated the girl's rubbings. While they would be right to stop her, kick her out or even fine her, I don't think they have the right to confiscate her property. Touching the carvings is what is against the rules, not having rubbings in your possession.

But she obtained the rubbings by breaking the rules.

Kind of like if there's a "no photos" sign and you take a picture.

Once you've taken it it's instantly yours.

But you obtained it by breaking the rules.

Should you be allowed to keep that pic you wrongly took, or should it be deleted before you leave?

It's nice to see them clamping down to be honest. Haven't been there in years, but I remenber tons of people touching carvings (in the Phnom Penh museum as well). I know most khmer don't know any better, as no western museum would allow you to touch stuff for obvious reasons (which are usually stated). So I always assumed barangs should know better. They even have signs up if I recall correctly. But I also remember seeing tons of Khmers fondling carvings, so hopefully it's just a clamp down.

"No photos" would be different. I would see it as more analogous to crossing the rope into one of those no entry zones within a temple that has been roped off because the structure is unsafe. If you cross the roped off area and take some photos, they catch you and tell you to move to the other side of the rope into the safe area, do they get to confiscate your memory card and demand that you delete the photos?

Touching the carvings, especially certain carvings, is a centuries old tradition, for luck and power. It has given some of the carvings part of the character they have and added to their history and mystery. But, yes, too many people now. Too many idiots too. So it has to stop.

My favorite apsaras at Angkor Wat, so shiny and smooth because centuries of visitors have noticed and appreciated them, adding to their history:

That Cambodian chick is really aggressive and rude. She should had talked calmly with that tourist.

I don't think that was a tourist. She seemed to speak some Khmer. She should have known better.
