Anyone ever actually take a Khmer girl to the US?

Post by dron »

Has anyone ever actually taken a Khmer girl who was not their wife to the US for tourist activities? I'm a US citizen, good income, etc,. but it doesn't matter I fear. As far as I know there is no possibility to sponsor someone for tourism to the US. They have to be approved on their own merits and in fact even mentioning a US boyfriend can get a visa app denied as the issuing officer may fear the girl is going to try to stay on in the US with her BF or get married while on a tourist visa. Or so I hear.

I took my Thai GF to the US twice a few years ago with no problem at all. She was educated at the best university in Thailand, came from a family with serious money, owned land and two cars in her own name, and had a government job. Her interview literally consisted of the question "what do you want to do in America?" She said "tourism" and got a 10 year visa with no further questions asked.

I know it's not going to be like that here. Probably not even possible. I have a male Khmer friend here with a rather large business and plenty of money who was rejected with no reason given on two occasions. The only reason he can think is that he has relatives in the states. Maybe they fear he'll stay with them.

In my case, my girlfriend is nineteen. She's been to every country in ASEAN with me. Nowhere else, as there aren't many visa free options for Cambodians unfortunately. She speaks decent English but she's definitely not fluent. She doesn't work or study anymore since staying with me. The only job she ever had was the one she worked for two months before she met me. Her mom and dad are very low level civil service workers in a distant province. I could put some money in a bank account for her, but would it help? Is it a total waste of time to even attempt to apply for a tourist visa for her? I'd really like to show her around my country.

Thanks

Haha. OP you might have just as much luck trying to adopt her as getting her a tourist visa. Based on what you wrote, I don't see a compelling reason for her to return to Cambodia, so I would not give her a visa if I were the consular official. You may be out of luck.

There are nine other ASEAN countries: Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam. Did you start traveling with her when she was 16?

You can take her to Macau, she can get visa on arrival, they may ask to see 5000 HKD in cash when she arrives. Hong Kong visas also not that hard to get. Maybe try China or Japan after that?

Depends on the officer in the embassy but i would say its very hard now considering your girls situation and the relationship between the two countries, i have been hearing a lot of Khmer guys visa denied although they are qualified.

Why does it have to be a visa-free country?

Just pay for whatever visa she requires, surely?

She has a passport, right? I don't understand why she cannot visit other countries.

...Hong Kong visas also not that hard to get....
Last June, my sister and her husband were visiting Hong Kong on a cruise ship, so I thought I'd pop over and say hello. I decided to take my partner, so I bought the tickets. Later I found out she would need a visa. We visited a travel agent and was told no as we weren't married.
