Anti-Malarials
Anti-Malarials
saw this thread on the dark site...
anyone knows, what anti-malarials are available in Cambodia
and where to buy?
price?
(no doxycycline)
probably its not otc.
in clinic/doctor - is expensive stuff like blood test necessary to have it prescribed or anything easy?

Re: Anti-Malarials
Stopped at U-Care to ask the price. Malarone is $78 for 12 tabs. Doxy is $1 for 10 tabs. Unless you plan on spending significant time in the countryside, there's not much point to taking malaria prophylaxis.

Re: Anti-Malarials
My GP confirmed with Health in Oz before we left that in Phnom Penh malaria should be treated symptomatically and not preventatively - rural issue. Anyone been told otherwise by a medical practitioner?

I have found medical travel advice from doctors outside the region to be on par with googling it yourself, and medical info you can google up to be generally poor.

Agreed - mine actually did some 'real' research though.

Re: Anti-Malarials
No, my Doctor said the same she printed a NHS or directgov map showing parts of Cambodia that needed anti-malarials. Phnom Penh wasn't included
Re: Anti-Malarials
thanks LTO!
this malarone 12 pills is apparently taken for 3 days as a cure, i understand
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atovaquone/proguanil
when i remember right, some 20 years ago, looking it up.
then the malaria PROPHYLAXIS was needed only, when you couldnt make it fast enough to the doctor/medication/diagnose.
as you can die of a fresh malaria infection.
so, if you dont take prophylaxis, then dont dismiss the signs, which could indicate malaria.

Re: Anti-Malarials
you can OF COURSE contract malaria in PP, but you will be at the doc in a short time.
thats why no malaria prophylaxis needed.
