Anti-Malarials

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Stopped at U-Care to ask the price. Malarone is $78 for 12 tabs. Doxy is $1 for 10 tabs. Unless you plan on spending significant time in the countryside, there's not much point to taking malaria prophylaxis.

My GP confirmed with Health in Oz before we left that in Phnom Penh malaria should be treated symptomatically and not preventatively - rural issue. Anyone been told otherwise by a medical practitioner?

I have found medical travel advice from doctors outside the region to be on par with googling it yourself, and medical info you can google up to be generally poor.

thanks LTO!

this malarone 12 pills is apparently taken for 3 days as a cure, i understand
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atovaquone/proguanil

when i remember right, some 20 years ago, looking it up.
then the malaria PROPHYLAXIS was needed only, when you couldnt make it fast enough to the doctor/medication/diagnose.
as you can die of a fresh malaria infection.

so, if you dont take prophylaxis, then dont dismiss the signs, which could indicate malaria.

you can OF COURSE contract malaria in PP, but you will be at the doc in a short time.
thats why no malaria prophylaxis needed.
