Anti-Malarials

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

thats why no malaria prophylaxis needed.
I've never heard of anyone contracting malaria in PP.

Dengue, yes.

Neither had the collective minds of the Oz medical community (which -does- deal with tropical diseases) but potty clearly has other experience.

No. It's because the likelihood of contracting it in PP is very low.

Whilst malarone is an excellent anti malarial (albeit expensive) do not assume it is the correct anti malarial for this area at this time. The recommended one is under constant review and change.

Malaria in Cambodia is Chloroquine/Mefloquine resistant. Malarone or Doxy are recommended if you are going to take anti-malarials. Anti-malarials are not advised for Phnom Penh and most other tourist areas. It is advised only for some rural areas and even then, is a bit of a toss up.

Just to be clear, malaria in Cambodia is resistant to Chloroquine and Mefloquine. These drugs are not recommended for use in Cambodia. They will not prevent malaria in Cambodia. And Mefloquine is a nasty, dangerous drug.
