Aeroplane on a treadmill...?
Without looking it up and cheating... what do you think would happen it a 747 on a giant treadmill that would go backwards as fast as the plane would move forwards were to try and take off?
And why?
And why?
Re: Aeroplane on a treadmill...?
No forward motion = no lift = absolutely nothing would happen!

What if it was an F-22 instead of a 747?OrangeDragon wrote:Without looking it up and cheating... what do you think would happen it a 747 on a giant treadmill that would go backwards as fast as the plane would move forwards were to try and take off?

Yes, airflow provides all the lift. If the thrust was canceled as you say it would just sit there and roar

I'll go ahead and give this until people stop posting in it before replying...

I took off into a strong Santa Ana one time. No forward progress.
Just revved the Continental, pulled the flaps, and up and making
forward progress.

It would take off if both forces were the same.

Re: Aeroplane on a treadmill...?
Thrust is not provided by wheels, but by the jets/props, so the plane would move forward off the treadmill, and then take off.

Re: Aeroplane on a treadmill...?
The wing turns thrust into lift. So if you move enough air
under the wing, you get lift off. Even if you are stopped on the runway.

Before I give a answer, I want to know is there a Cambodian pilot flying the 747 ?
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
