Advice for you at 22

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Then, once my 4 year contract was up, I'd be ready to decide I'd higher education was the correct path.
This is pretty much what I did, joined at 17 as an Infantryman and then learnt a trade and gained a civilian qualification. I don't enjoy the trade I learnt , but I have used it as a fall-back several times since leaving the army, and will always have the skills and knowledge of that trade to use if needed, as well as all the other skills, ethos and values instilled in me as a soldier. I only wish I'd been smarter with my money, as per my previous post on this thread.

I would tell myself to go back and finish school.

I never even finished high school. While I have a good corporate job now the lack of qualifications will hurt me later on in life I fear.

@kiwinincambodia, well done for making it despite the odds, but I suggest you do an online degree to level the playing field somewhat.

Yeah I've been meaning to do that. Need to get my arse into gear and actually get going on completing some form of education.

The worst piece of financial advice in history is to believe in the power of compound interest. When you take into account inflation... most bank accounts, in the West and here, will barely allow your money to keep pace with its initial purchasing power.

It needs qualifying... compound interest only works for you when you beat the rate of inflation. And to do that, you need to invest in things that deliver bigger returns. Buy land, buy businesses, buy collectibles, etc. but don't stick it in the bank. When Ben and Arthur retire they're going to find their millions ain't worth much. And no fund in the universe produces 12% annual returns for 40 odd years...

I did an international degree with University of London: http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/di ... e-learning
Hard slog, but very worthwhile and the degree is equivalent to what you would get at the university. Most of the degrees allow you between 3-8 years to complete them, so you can work out how much time you want to spend studying each year. I think Massey Uni in NZ also does online degrees and you would probably pay less as a NZer than as an international student elsewhere.

That said, pretty sure that at 22 I would not have been capable of putting in the necessary work, giving up fun time for study time. And what was the point since I was going to die young ? :fool:

I would not waste my time giving advice to a 22 year old me because at that age I would not have listened to advice from a retired old fart, especially myself.

Reminds me of that Bruce Willis movie Looper. The young Bruce Willis character either tries or is successful in killing his older self for money.

Good point. Would you have listened to yourself as an old fart ? Probably not.
(Advise myself to have another beer. :beer1: )
