Advice for you at 22
Re: Advice for you at 22
This is pretty much what I did, joined at 17 as an Infantryman and then learnt a trade and gained a civilian qualification. I don't enjoy the trade I learnt , but I have used it as a fall-back several times since leaving the army, and will always have the skills and knowledge of that trade to use if needed, as well as all the other skills, ethos and values instilled in me as a soldier. I only wish I'd been smarter with my money, as per my previous post on this thread.Sir_Quality_U_Feel wrote: I'd tell my 18 year old self to join the United States Air Force and do 4 years learning a mechanical or technical skills, SOME SKILL even if I hate it, at least I'd have it for life. Then, once my 4 year contract was up, I'd be ready to decide I'd higher education was the correct path.

I would tell myself to go back and finish school.
I never even finished high school. While I have a good corporate job now the lack of qualifications will hurt me later on in life I fear.

Permission denied until motorcycle pictures sent.Sir_Quality_U_Feel wrote:If Vlad allows, I'll change the age to my 18 year young self instead of 22.
@kiwinincambodia, well done for making it despite the odds, but I suggest you do an online degree to level the playing field somewhat.

Re: Advice for you at 22
The worst piece of financial advice in history is to believe in the power of compound interest. When you take into account inflation... most bank accounts, in the West and here, will barely allow your money to keep pace with its initial purchasing power.
It needs qualifying... compound interest only works for you when you beat the rate of inflation. And to do that, you need to invest in things that deliver bigger returns. Buy land, buy businesses, buy collectibles, etc. but don't stick it in the bank. When Ben and Arthur retire they're going to find their millions ain't worth much. And no fund in the universe produces 12% annual returns for 40 odd years...

I did an international degree with University of London: http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/di ... e-learningkiwiincambodia wrote:I would tell myself to go back and finish school.

Hard slog, but very worthwhile and the degree is equivalent to what you would get at the university. Most of the degrees allow you between 3-8 years to complete them, so you can work out how much time you want to spend studying each year. I think Massey Uni in NZ also does online degrees and you would probably pay less as a NZer than as an international student elsewhere.
That said, pretty sure that at 22 I would not have been capable of putting in the necessary work, giving up fun time for study time. And what was the point since I was going to die young ?

I would not waste my time giving advice to a 22 year old me because at that age I would not have listened to advice from a retired old fart, especially myself.
Reminds me of that Bruce Willis movie Looper. The young Bruce Willis character either tries or is successful in killing his older self for money.

Good point. Would you have listened to yourself as an old fart ? Probably not.KickingWithRedLabel wrote:I would not waste my time giving advice to a 22 year old me because at that age I would not have listened to advice from a retired old fart, especially myself.
