Administration/Moderation Concerns?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

First, thanks for everyone's patience.

Second, Ronny is permabanned.

While I believe that damn near anything and everything should be discussed, CEO is not a place for such hateful people to have a platform. Not only does he say he doesn't believe in the Holocaust, his true, hateful colors really came out on that topic. While you might think we should completely delete his outrageous and disgusting posts on that topic, I feel like it really shows the reality of the people who are Holocaust deniers. I would like to ignorantly think it's just an issue of disputed facts, but that stance is clearly just a way to be hateful and hurtful to Jews and everyone else. If I thought for ONE SECOND that his posts were actually harmful in the big scheme of things I'd delete it, but they are so clearly misguided and hateful that it really serves no other purpose other than show the true nature of Holocaust deniers. And just so nobody can come to CEO and read that thinking it's 'acceptable,' his rank is clearly marked BANNED. I would hope that anyone viewing that topic would clearly see he made racist comments, everyone in the community called him out for it and he's clearly banned and not welcome aboard.

On a personal level, I think everyone should be allowed to be as fucking retarded as they want, and for it to be 'illegal' to deny historical events seems kind of crazy. It's not that I think they have a point, I just find it baffling that it would be deemed illegal to have such views. I guess the only reason it became law in some countries is because you'd have to hate Jews to say something so offensive, as I think any sane person would clearly acknowledge it's occurrence, even if you don't agree with exact numbers.

As an American who went to private schools with a lot of Jewish classmates, I never realized until much later in life how offended Jews are when you are less than polite. In my eyes growing up, Jews were people you respected. Yes, I heard a lot of "Jewish' jokes (no, I won't be sharing them, but they were generally about being rich or thrifty), and they never seemed hateful and always seemed to point out how good they were with money. Those families were the rich kids in class. Sure, a lot of them had a funny accent, but it wasn't a ghetto accent or anything. A few families I remember were from New York, and they were stereotypical in a good way. All doing financially well, driving nice cars, etc, so calling them Jewish was almost a sincere complement.

I even remember one kid getting called a Dradle Spinner (sp?), and he never minded, but one day his dad heard about it and came to the school and raised hell. The kid seemed as shocked by his dad's response as everyone else. We were all told how mean that was and that we couldn't ever say that again. I remember years back a Jewish American girl in Phnom Penh being super upset because someone said something about her being so Jewish when she saved money by walking or something. She was really upset and I was saying that I didn't think it was a big deal at all and that clearly it wasn't said in a hateful way, and was a compliment. Saving money is a good thing, right? It's not like people call you Jewish when you steal something or do something stupid. Anyways, I don't think I cheered her up, but it did make me realize that Jewish people are very sensitive about it. Fair enough, all things considered.

Again, I've always thought of it being a good thing to be Jewish. Even in the movies it's always the Jews that have all the money. Stereotypical, sure, but I far from insulting.

So again, while I'd like to think that Holocaust deniers just have a difference of opinion on historical facts, it's clear that anyone who would think or say such a thing is just doing so to be hurtful, which Ronny so clearly displayed.

Pizza lover pointed out how it's especially an important topic in Cambodia where a genocide is not too far back in time, with many survivors still around, and almost everyone scarred from it to one degree or another. This is another reason why I think it's best to leave Ronny's insane comments for all to see, as to me it's the best proof that nobody in their right minds would be a Holocaust denier, and anyone with that position can clearly only have it alongside hatred for the Jewish people.

Pizza Lover started a very interesting topic about an individual that I think warrants the publicity is is receiving. Even without Ronny spoiling it, it is an interesting story to talk about, so I will also be unlocking it. CEO knows that discussions that involve Nazis can often quickly go downhill in a flash, so I can't guarantee that it will never have an offensive comment on it, but Ronny was well beyond expressing his opinion, so anything like that will be deleted as quick as we can. Thanks to those who reported the issues on that topic, which ALWAYS help us decide what actions are best for the community.

Again, CEO has been getting much busier very quickly, so yes, actual modding actions have been a bit slower than usual, and getting another member on the Mod team is something we are working on. No promises about a timeline, but if CEO expects to keep up with our rate of growth we will certainly need more hands on deck, the sooner the better. As you might have guessed, a lot of thought goes into decisions like giving another member superpowers, so it's something we want to be very sure about before we do it.

As of a few days ago, we have a developer working on a list of about 15 projects/tasks, at least two of which are based on direct feedback from you guys (one is the active topics at the top of the site and another is the display of who the CEO 'team' is, and I think there are a few more that are direct suggestions from fellow members). The other projects are various updates and tweeks that will improve the overall experience on CEO.

Hell, as I type this, I just received feedback from another member who has suggestions about one of the 'styles' you can choose to view CEO with. I agree with the input based on the screenshot and we will see what we can do. Won't make it to this round of projects, but we definitely can improve the site style for the other style (not the dark one). Thanks for that, and you know who you are, LoL.

Bottom line is I think we all just want a place where discussions are encouraged not stiffened, and although we can't always agree on every. single. decision, I hope we can all be easygoing enough to realize that the CEO Mod Team all want the same thing, and we will do whatever we can to make sure this is a community we are all proud of and feel comfortable having serious discussions along with some harmless fun thrown in the mix from time to time.

Thanks to everyone who makes this an entertaining site by starting new topics and/or participates in others, as without you all CEO would not exist as it is. There has been a clear effort lately for fellow members to go out and find interesting content to share on CEO, and that is fucking awesome! A special thanks to you, as although we try ourselves to find as much cool stuff to have here, we will NEVER be able to find it all, so a special thanks to you guys who take the time to come up with new topic ideas here!

Question re: search function.

When I tried to find the "Funny Cambodian MUG SHOTS and Criminal Arrests" thread using search it did not come up. I also went to the search page and searched thread titles with no result. Is it broken? Or is it set to ignore the asinine forum? Or thread titles? What gives?

On the main search page, you can choose to search by forum.
Asinine is not in the list, so presumably it is not searchable.

In a situation like this you can google search for 'mugshots site:cambodiaexpatsonline.com'
The thread you want is at the top of the search results.

Yes, I ended up Googling it, was just curious why search didn't locate it. Cheers

Correct, it's NOT just you. We have already scheduled a bit of work to be done in a couple hours (hence the bright red notice above) to help with the issue, so let us know tomorrow morning if it's better, worse or the same.

Thanks a lot for reporting your experience, as it helps us narrow down where it could be coming from.

True, site very slow on every browser,OS or internet connection now but think the new upgrade is only in 2 hours so should be resolved after that.

Yeah, I'll bump this after the work has been done.

In case something goes terribly wrong and everything gets nuked, I just wanted to say goodbye and I love you all.
