Go 4th and Multiply

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Sister in law did her part. Had the kid on the boat. Water levels were too low on the Tonle Sap to make to make it shore and the hospital. Her boat got stuck.

Local Midwife was sent out to her boat and deliver.

Very dangerous rhetoric in my book. The main problem in most societies is that wealthy/educated folks are not having kids, only the poorest are getting anywhere with bringing the average up; and that in turn leads to another generation of kids who aren't brought up with any stability, unable to support their own families, broken families, etc. I would argue this is a net negative effect on society. There are of course rags to riches stories from all countries, but they are the exception, not the rule.

I don't buy into Elon Musk & chums thoughts that declining birth rates are the end of days for our species; we've been around for a long time. I would guess that over time rates rise and fall in all nations, so this current fad of "go forth & multiply" is just a knee jerk reaction to a stat that has come under the spotlight, particularly in Japan, Korea, etc. Economically it will cause issues, but economists need to get out of the way of mother nature sorry, to me there is a silver lining of a low population, mass automation (Japan) & a search how to solve these problems in a different way rather than just pumping out more humans to pay tax for the elderly to be looked after.

"Sit Deus propitius huic potatori."

Japan actually moved its manufacturing overseas and spent billions setting everything up to take advantage of the host countries abundant workforce.

I think the panic over Cambodian birthrates has come from China tbh. As a country develops and moves forward into a more technological based economy there is always an enormous movement of people into urban areas and these people are having less children. Rural families have the space to raise 3+ children whereas a family living in an apartment in an urban environment having a large family is simply not practical, desired or even affordable for most.
Personally, I was thinking about this recently when I was looking at some old photos I took of the Night MArket back in 2010. Every other clothes stall was selling pregnancy clothes/dresses and now they have all gone. The spots are now occupied by vendors selling clothes for children and young men/women.

A smaller global population that is able to take advantage of advancing technology may actually be a good thing.
One thing I am not sure about though is the possibility that advancements in gene editing where parents can improve the academic abilities of their future offspring. While this is a staple of many science fiction novels ,think Elysium or Alita: Battle Angel, is another, it may lead to societies similar to those portrayed in the 2 movies I mentioned. None of the scenarios in these novels pan out well for society as a whole. Sure, for the select few live is bliss.... but for the majority live is not so easy.

The next world war may make all the above mute anyway and the way things are going it may happen sooner rather than later.

The definition of rich becomes less important as technology advances. By modernizing agriculture towards automated horticulture and advancing communication standards, the city is losing its importance. Look abroad at how office space has lost value. What is considered rich today, with the Range Rover and all the rest, could be considered primitive and tasteless by any standards for the foreseeable future

Population pyramid inversion is a very real problem. Previously the pyramid led to an economic boom (especially in East Asia). Now, the opposite. Countries that haven’t invested much in social programs are having issues. Elderly Japanese are dying in their cars (pension isn’t enough for housing) or committing crimes to live in prison. Or living in ghettoes in Tokyo, etc.

The problem is the entire social system is based on this pyramid. The entire tax base, too. Every government service is funded by taxes.

A big driver of this pyramid inversion is that it’s increasingly expensive to have a kid. And increasingly more expensive to live in general. Both spouses working multiple jobs doesn’t provide much baby making time.

Before one needed a roof and food. Now, techno gadgets and internet are required for work (and play).

A whole bunch of jumbled thoughts and opinions.
