Re: Postcards for Sale - help support a local NGO
Considering 26 years in operation, as you say, I found it curious that there are no ratings or reviews on Google or on fbPostcard_Seller wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 8:40 amBut then why ask me? I’m writing these responses too!Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 8:37 amYeah, I did read the website but obviously you guys write that.Postcard_Seller wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 8:22 am The NGO is well established and registered in Cambodia for over 25 years. We have a decent online presence (our website is my first hit when I Google ‘care for Cambodia’), mature social media (FB and Instagram).
If you are genuinely interested then it isn’t hard to find out more about us. I think all the information you requested is publicly available online.
26 years is a long time. One might reasonably think that one or two grateful families might leave you guys a review
Similarly on the website you guys advertise poverty tourism trips so that visitors "can see the difference our work makes" once again, over a timeline longer than a quarter century I am surprised at No reviews at all
Ah, so you wrote the website too? Again, how would I divine this info? For all I know you could be an overly zealous volunteer

We have plenty of individuals and families who have benefitted. But maybe unsurprisingly they aren’t that focussed on completing online reviews. It’s not actually something we have asked them to do - and how many Cambodians, especially rural Cambodians know the internet outside their Facebook feed?
We often share testimonies of lives impacted but it is a tricky balance to do this without taking advantage of the aid recipient. We try to give dignity to our clients and not plaster their names and photos online.
Poverty tourism - we are well aware of this issue. Things have changed a lot in the past 20 years, what we do now is different to what we did 20 years and there is a line to tread between showing our work and falling into ‘poverty tourism’ I believe we are on the right side of that line - other may disagree but we are always open to listening to the debate and making changes.
In reality an NGO needs donors, donors often need to see what they are giving to and the benefits it brings and we need to meet that need without taking advantage of those in need.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

The trips are not poverty tourism - though I understand your concerns. We are very protective of the communities in which we work. We focus on hope and transformation rather than stories of pity.
We do need to communicate a bit of the ‘before’ situation though and this is done as sensitively and non-touristy as possible.

Why not make phone covers instead of postcards? Everyone uses them and if they had a nice logo people could get their 'I'm a donor' kudos for months for a one-off price. Just a thought....Postcard_Seller wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 6:36 amLol, not even one!Doc67 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 1:27 amI hope you sell some postcard after this interrogation.Postcard_Seller wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 11:59 amI am Jonny, yes.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 10:34 am .....Similarly on the website you guys advertise poverty tourism trips so that visitors "can see the difference our work makes" "

Postcards are so 1970's (like me, and I suspect you too)

I think phone covers would be too difficult. There are too many brands/models of phones out there with differing dimensions. Also good cases with MagSafe or good protection are too expensive to make.Doc67 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 8:41 pmWhy not make phone covers instead of postcards? We have sold a decent amount elsewhere and have covered costs, anything sold now is profit.
They are being bought and used not so much as postcards but as ‘thank you’ or ‘thinking of you’ cards. A few people also bought them to display.
Also, grandad, my birthdate just about scraped into the 70’s

They're good designs, I think they would sell better as A3 sized posters with a bit of a blurb and contact details at the bottom. Get them up in a few trendy bars and I think you'd make a few more sales.
Selling postcards to expats in a country with no postman is going to be a tough one. Especially when tourists are thin on the ground
