This is a scam written into the law. What happens in most cases. A foreign man buys a motorbike and puts it into his girlfriends name. It legally belongs to her from the beginning. At any time in the future she can do what she likes with it.

Another scam written into the law is foreigners are not allowed to hire motorbikes in Siem Reap. Most are forced to pay the tuk tuk mafia.

Many Cambodians believe it is OK to scam foreigners, to the point where it gets written into the law.

Many barang I know who've bought a 2nd hand moto have just kept the rego card from the original owner. I'm not sure/doubt many would bother to transfer it to their girlfriend's name (have you got stats on that? ) .. and is there much advantage in doing that anyway? Either way, it's still not in the barang's name.

I've been doing just that for years and haven't had a problem the only thing that has changed recently is that you have to show the card now but doesn't have to be the original a copy is good even just a photo of it on you phone

As for moto registration: can't.

Can’t change now. Law changed last year.

The Ministry of Public Works & Transport (MPWT) are constantly revising laws recently regarding foreign registered owners of cars in Cambodia.

When selling your registered vehicle to a new owner, the MPWT now requires you to go in-person to submit your passport & visa copy, and place your thumbprint onto the new registration forms, in order to successfully change ownership.

This will cause problems for cars that are registered to foreign owners who have since left the country, and are no longer able to attend the MPWT office to submit registration.

Selling a car registered to a foreigner who has since left the country, has now become an unknown, and will no doubt cause local buyers to question the purchase. Potentially making the sale very difficult.

We hope to bring you more information regarding this issue very soon....

Which by my reckoning means that it's still quite simple to change the registration to your own name as a foreigner, just ensure the previous owner is present. Eg. Don't buy a car off someone leaving the country the next day.

It's not possible for a bike in Phnom Penh, even if previous owner is present. Not sure about a car. Technically possible if you own your own place, but even then would be a pain.

Yes, issues with bikea is established. Cars are straightforward.

I have a question for CURRENT car owners, Please no, i think or i heard.
ONLY 100% confirmed

Is there any advantage /disadvantage to it being in ur name as a Barang, or a Khmers name?
also if one wishes to drive into Thailand, the car needs be in the travelers name OR a notarized paper giving permission
has anyone driven his khmer plated car into Thailand? In their name or with the said paper?
once i move over i want buy a 2nd hand car, but I also want to still do trips into Thailand

You can only take your KH car into Thailand at some borders and it has to be in your name. You also need to take out insurance I believe for TH).
It’s also cheaper to register and less grief (unless you have a fixer) to put it in your wife/partners name, even if she can’t drive. Although that may be an issue at the border!

That’s the only benefit, unless you’re looking to sell and you see it as a good selling point for the new owner.

Insurance companies at the moment don’t care but I can see that changing. Traffic laws will be tightened up as Cambodia develops. It’s inevitable.

any idea which borders? i have dealt with all of them, but only driving my thai car out of Cambodia into Thailand and they all were easy
at Palin i had to drive around for 5 minutes to find the thai customs office
