Diagn. says crankshaft sensor
and for ISM no communication from CAN N80.

Which prices were you checking? ISM or Crankshaft Sensor?
ISM is $440 - remanufactured, needs programming though - $150 for labor plus online $350. (MB PP won't do it on third-party parts but the part is $1530 at MB PP).
Crankshaft sensor is around $25.
DHL parcel Euro 50 for both.
DHL express Euro 121 for both

What is the base value? The cost new in the country of manufacture? What about a second hand car bought on the cheap, so they except your valuation?
This is a used car value set by the Cambodian tax department according to their market research. They do not accept invoice values. So you might buy cheap but actually they say it's worth more. They don't use your quoted year of manufacture either. They go by VIN, you might have a 2018 car but it's a 2019 model which is seen on the VIN. Anything manufactured after August will automatically be counted a for the next year, though it might actually be the same year model. You want to dispute that you can then haggle with them and wait about 6 months for a release of the vehicle. The port will charge for storage for that entire time. So good luck with importing cars as a business.

Maybe I’m looking in the wrong place.
There is a difference between second hand used and remanufactured, where they replace servos, motors and relays etc, and they are $1000 but it’s been a while so I may be out of touch.

Not too sound funny here, but even so the car (apart from a none runner) is that of high mileage, and more so an old 14-year-old car.
I actually owned one here older, being a Thai import of a 1992 Hilux Surf, the seller wanted just short of $4000 I paid him $3000 it had a years tax, but wanted the rear drivers side tyre replacing, I found out the tire would not last from Battambang to Siam Reap when I had a blowout on road 6. Changing the tyre eventually in Siam Reap to match the other Pirelli tyres. Later I replaced all the ball joints and the master cylinder, also it had two batteries, one I replaced.
I two had a similar problem in Preah Vihear with the gear box has you have, managed to force select 2nd drive to get me too a repair shop, were they sourced the new parts from Thailand and had them delivered to the border, they picked them up the following morning and I had the car back at tea time.
Later the engine gave out in the hills of Koh Kong, eventually getting it to the garage, I was told it wanted a replacement engine, priced at $2500, I sold them the car there, because I caught them steeling parts while I was still coming to a decision to change the engine.
Either way what I am getting at old or new, its an expensive hobby to have a car here.

$2500 for a new engine so you sold them the car?
That’s $400 tops for a replacement.

Whilst $12k seems a lot it is a common fault (ISM) but not the fault of a Khmer mechanic, as he noted.

Besides which why are you comparing a knackered $3k RHD Toyota you probably owned for less than six months (I’m guessing) to a LHD middle range Mercedes owned for eight years by the same owner?

I’m all for probing questions but that’s about as relevant as £15 cigarettes in the UK.

What I am comparing is the cost of keeping a car on the road here, and the practicality of its use I was considering. The use of the Hilux was just right for the area were I lived that was only miles and miles of dirt roads, plus it could carry all my building materials that was a need, also while I was in the middle of nowhere it was a good safe place to sleep.
Where are you comparing the price of a reconditioned replacement engine? Because like your cigarettes at £15 and 1000reil here parts could be found where ever you please to look, like the gearbox part for the Hilux, collection and fitted $40, the UK @£200. If I had replaced the engine, I could have had it for many years (maybe),
I wish him well with the sale, are you going to buy it? Thing is I can’t get my head around the prices here, there was talk of luxury goods, but the car now is far of the mark of this when you see cars the Khmer are buying.

Ok but I don’t understand why you had to ship it from Thailand if they are wherever you please to look?

And anyway. If you think that junker was expensive to run try a Mercedes and see how you get on. Expensive luxury cars are expensive to run and repair. If you are on a budget get a Toyota!

I had the Merc in PP. Lovely car, went like stink but constant electrical problems. I smashed the sump on the kerb parking outside the gym bar and no one could fix it properly. Lovely engine, 2.8 straight six and about 30mpg thrashing it on the highway. It went all over Cambodia and I have some great memories of it. Sold it for about half what I paid. Should have bought a Lexie.
