Why Cambodian eats bugs like cricket and tarantulas?

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

SC, did you ever try one of these bad boys?

Surprisingly good meat, like a cross between fresh water yabbies and chicken.

I did indeed JP. Those are called bungarras or perenti by the locals back home and do indeed taste like slightly off chicken. Good when they're grilled directly on coals.

We had a few generations of them on campus, they are protected but we had to convince the indigenous gardening staff to not eat them. The adults grew to about 10 feet long, would sun themselves on the verandahs, and wouldn't give way to anybody. You don't mess with the big ones.

We ended up with a big one in the backyard a couple of days before Christmas one year
SC was out of town. I had to bring the dogs inside as they had it bailed up by the fence (big claws). So I had to separate them from the 2 indoor cats, and the cats from the Christmas presents I was in the process of wrapping. Talk about chaos in the house while I wanted for the ranger....

Santa Claus?

I've tried the spiders, crickets, snakes, beetles, roach-looking things and even the larva.

The ONLY thing I actually "liked" was the crickets.

The beetles were by far the nastiest. Tasted like I thought a bug would taste. :bad:

Tried the bee larva with Khmerinade and Mrs K - first mouthful was fine, and then my mind caught up and told my body I was eating maggots. After ambulance service I have a very poor tolerance for maggots, and that was me done. Had the frogs that night too - very good, but tasted mainly of fire chilies. The BBQ beef was great.

Oh, and ants (mixed with the beef, I think). Top notch.

This kind of thing? These ones are really tough, they need a lot of shredding before you can eat them. Don't taste much different than dried fish. I've eaten fresh snake in a soup, again tasted like fish.
Coiled into flat disks, looked really unappetising compared to snake-on-a-stick. Apparently used in soups when dried like this.

I've eaten plenty of fresh snake in Oz with the locals, somewhere between chicken and fish would be a reasonable description.
Never heard of that one. From what I've seen, it's more of a snack when having a drink of rice wine with the lads.

That's what I thought. A lot of effort gone into coiling them if you're just going to boil them in soup.
