I've talked to old people here who have said that Tarantulas were previously only eaten as medicine, for sore throats, and it's only been since the 1970s that they were eaten as snacks. You don't see them eaten often though anyway, and they're expensive. Crickets are much more common, but they eat them all over the region.

Saw some small dried snakes in Psaar Orussey on Sunday but was told they were not cooked yet so cannot eat. Anyone had these?

Interesting, especially the specificity of it.John Bingham wrote:I've talked to old people here who have said that Tarantulas were previously only eaten as medicine, for sore throats, and it's only been since the 1970s that they were eaten as snacks. Ancient Khmers ate snails. The frog issue is a matter of dispute though I can't imagine why they wouldn't.Rama wrote:What about frogs and snails?

This kind of thing? These ones are really tough, they need a lot of shredding before you can eat them. Don't taste much different than dried fish. I've eaten fresh snake in a soup, again tasted like fish.

Yep, I tried one once and I can't imagine what would make me want another when there are so many better things to nibble.

Coiled into flat disks, looked really unappetising compared to snake-on-a-stick. Apparently used in soups when dried like this.John Bingham wrote:StroppyChops wrote:Saw some small dried snakes in Psaar Orussey on Sunday but was told they were not cooked yet so cannot eat. Anyone had these?

I've eaten plenty of fresh snake in Oz with the locals, somewhere between chicken and fish would be a reasonable description.
