What do explats dislike about Khmer culture?

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

What do explats dislike about Khmer culture?

Try to avoid generalities and find specific reasons or incidents. Also prefer expats who have lived here longer than one year, but certainly not restricted to that group.

There is a variety of things I dislike about them having lived with them in a small village for years. However, I will save my comments until other expats have posted. Primarily, I find the smiley face that Lonely Planet paints to be horribly superficial.

"Saving face", racism/classicm, the utter indifference to another person's suffering, and the inability of neighbours to understand/accept that what is mine is not theirs.

The whole idea of one-upmanship, or the "Bong Thom" culture. Basically, always attempting to look rich/important and regard all others as inferior. It can be generalized to all Cambodians or Asians, but it does come out a lot more here than in the west. It seems so vain and ridiculously self-centered to most westerners. Let's face it, how many of us have seen such a concentration of luxury cars elsewhere in the world? This combined with the fact that Cambodia is still one of the poorest countries in the world is somewhat disgusting to me.

Yeah, it reminds me of a joking German expression, "Was ist meins ist meins und was ist deins ist auch meins." What is mine is mine and what is yours is also mine. But it isn't only about possessions; it also concerns personal space. One sees this all the time while driving; they either tailgate or cross into your
lane to pass a vehicle in front of them. Or if you are standing in line they think nothing of barging in front of you. Or frequently i I am reading a newspaper, they will peer close over my shoulder(I can feel their breath in my ear) even though they can't read the English they want to see the pictures.

More correctly (although roughly), "es gibt keine verkaufen, sie existieren nicht, gibt es nur mich."
