Water Festival 10-12 November 2019

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

The European Union continues its support for a women boat dubbed "Preah Pey Srapor" from Kampong Basrov village, Chulsa commune, Chulkiri district, Kampong Chhnang province.

This is the second year that the EU sponsors the boat, aiming at enhancing Cambodia's cultural richness and promoting gender equality, part of the development cooperation with Cambodia.

According a press release of the EU Delegation in Cambodia, since 2018, the EU has started sponsoring the boat committee and 62 women rowers. This women boat started participating since 1997 and they are the 19 times winners at the Water Festival in Phnom Penh. 500,000 condoms distributed to citizens in Phnom Penh
(Nov 03, 2019 2:14 pm)
It is observed that every year, as long as Cambodia holds the Royal Water Festival, or the Bon Om Touk Festival, the authorities always distribute Ok condoms to a large number of people free of charge
With all these condoms being distributed by the government how are the local condom cops going to find evidence that unauthorized prostitution has occurred?

Now back to the topic at hand...

Some people have expressed doubts over the distribution of condoms, but in fact, the authorities are being realist because people from the provinces will come to Phnom Penh, and during that time sex will inevitably occur. That's why Phnom Penh health authorities are offering 500,000 free condoms to prevent sexually tranmitted diseases, in particular HIV or AIDS.
In order to fully appreciate the pun((in case you've not yet figured it out) ao plien or raincoat in English is Cambodian slang for prophylactic.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Now I know where the U.K.'s £11 Billion net EU contribution is going.

I watched big chunks of the racing over three days, wandered back to my hotel about 6pm Monday afternoon, just after the event had finished, and sent off an email to a friend.
It said something like this-
"we just had 1 million people on the riverbank for three days, from all over the country, packed into a small area. I could not believe how pleasant, peaceful and good humoured it all was - only in Cambodia"
An hour later 450 were dead from a stampede.
I had a similar experience except while heading back home after meeting a friend for an early dinner, I and anyone else heading away from the river had to squeeze through the masses of people heading toward the river. We had to walk in an ant line single file to get out and I thought that if some one stumbles, they're going to get trampled.

Finally, I reached an open area and breathed a sigh of relief. Then, shortly after reaching my apartment, I started hearing sirens. So, I turned on the TV and saw a bit of footage of those trapped on the bridge before turning it off.

Not a particularly cheery memory.

I may be going to hell in a bucket,
but at least I'm enjoying the ride.
