Tourists and Bad Air Quality Threaten Angkor Wat

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Considering a huge chunk of the tourist revenues don't circulate back into the Siem Reap or Cambodian economy, I dont give a hoot. And most of the transport operations, restaurants and hotels are either foreign owned or by the elites in PP...where the 70% of the locals has to work at a slavery wages for ridiculous hours; most relied on tips and side earnings than the salary itself.

Air quality was great when i was there a month ago. Can´t really say that about siem reap. Also liked the way it is managed with nice english speaking staff at the entrance and riding along the street in a tuk-tuk is pleasant. Only thing that fucks it up is the amount of tourists they let in, after a while you just refuse to leave the tuk-tuk and watch it from a distance. Especially if you`ve been there before. Really like the small restaurant at sras srang. The road from Phnom Penh is bad at the moment but seen much worse here.

the highway from SR to PP is not mission critical for cambodia as they're importing most of the goods from Vietnam.

and that's why the road from PP to Saigon and PP to snooky are in decent shape, snooky because it's their only deep sea port, and to saigon for all the import/export to/from vietnam.

will they ever learn ?
NO.

as for singapore :

they can print singapore dollars, while cambodia cannot print US dollars like there's no tomorrow as they do with Riels, they've a strict limit, their economy is real and they cannot ask for trillions in loan to the IMF as many other failed states.

the rural areas of cambodia, bangladesh, philippines, indonesia, are the real cesspool of asia in terms or ROI, with peasant living standards being among the lowest in the world.

if one day they stop working the entire continent would face inflation, and same for all the garment workers in chinese factories wokring for 70$/month.

this place is poor because it accepted to be sucked in the poverty spiral and now there's no way out as the only things actually working are provided by foreign investors.

as the KR realized, the only way to be autonomous was to go back being a full blown agricultural society and this is still cambodia's core business and bread & butter and it will be this way for a long time to come.

since the money in the banks is what it is, not much, you can't expect any mega project on infrastructures, it will take decades just to have decent highways, if ever, and forget about trains or ferry boats or new airports.

it wouldn't be like this is cambo was part of vietnam as vietnam would invest a shitload of money into the country.
and same if they kept the French instead of going nuts with their silly nationalism.

what did they got with nationalism ? civil wars, poverty, third world, landmines, a collapsed infrastructure, and a hopeless future.
and all this for the vanity of their royal family and their insatiable ego.

now they think all it takes is opening a few schools and universities and magically there will be a supply of local doctors or engineers.
bullshit, they will still need to money to build the infrastructures, and with no infrastructures in place the foreigners will not come to invest.

in short, this place is fucked and doomed to fail because it's the result of historical events caused by their own greed and there's a price to pay for that.

SR, near Thai border, quick in and out. Keep tourism at bay. Developed tourism, the whole game would get away from the man with the stranglehold. THAT is what keeps Cambodia down. Managed "success". But that's just as I see it.

Tourists? Hey, they rake in $20 a pop? Clean up.

Bad air quality? You are in Cambodia. Rent an air conditioned car westerner.
