"Ting mong", Scarecrows to Ward Off Sickness
Kratie villagers set up scarecrows in front of homes following ‘cholera’ outbreak
Khorn Savi | Publication date 06 May 2019 | 08:16 ICT
Hundreds of families, including those belonging to ethnic groups, in four villages in Kratie province’s Chitr Borei district have erected ting mong figures in front of their houses to drive away the evil spirits they believe brought cholera after residents fell sick.
The human-like figures, said to originate in pre-Buddhist animist belief, were put up in Kou Lorb commune’s Banteay, Samrith, Kambor and Kou Lorb villages.
Yin Srin, a Kou Lorb resident, said erecting a ting mong in front of houses is a practice villagers carried out whenever many people fell sick unusually.
“In any year that a lot of villagers unusually fell sick, they become scared and superstitiously put up ting mong to protect themselves. There were three to four family members getting sick per house, so they put up ting mong,” she said.
Chhun Sros, another resident, said although his family thought it strange that his children and grandchildren had fallen sick with fever, diarrhoea and sore throats, he had not erected a ting mong as he believed the illness resulted from the recent extremely hot weather.
“Many villagers became sick. Some had dengue fever. Some who had diarrhoea were said to have cholera, whereas they had in fact eaten something bad."
“There is no need to put up [ting mong] because we can see a doctor. But my son saw other people doing so and he demanded we do the same,” he said.

What are Ting Mong ?
A simple explanation of Cambodia's "Ting Mong scarecrows":
Ting Mong – Cambodia’s Creepy Scarecrows
By Spooky on May 10th, 2011
If you ask me, common scarecrows are creepy enough, but the Cambodian Ting Mong carry real firearms and instead of birds they scare off evil spirits.
Scarecrows usually belong in the fields, protecting villagers’ crops, but in some Cambodian villages you’ll see them in front of houses, by the gate, or on garden paths, and you can bet they’re not there to scare some man-eating birds. Ting Mong are a part of old Khmer culture, and even though Budhism came to Cambodia thousands of years ago, there are still some rural areas where people believe in spirits and their power over the living. These creepy “scarecrows” are actually guardians who ward off evil spirits and protect against disease and death.
Many Khmers believe a powerful force is embodied in the Ting Mong, which will keep spirits from coming inside, and to make them even more effective, they equip the life-size dolls with real or sculpted weapons. Some carry machetes and swords, while other carry modern weaponry like revolvers, AK47s and even sculpted bazookas. Even a bad-ass spirit wouldn’t dare approach a Ting Mong carrying this kind of firepower.

A friend of mine who lived here since 1995 and left recently took that photo. I think it was in Kampong Thom and all the Ting Mongs had guns or RPGs then. That one in the OP's article looks like its face is a print-out of that "troll face" guy from the memes.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Two scarecrows are tied to a fence as a woman works on the driveway in front of houses in Cambodia’s Kampong Cham province on Sunday, as superstitious residents in the region set up the sentries known as ‘Ting Mon’ in Khmer to ward off the COVID-19 Coronavirus during the pandemic. AFP

Cambodian farmers deploy scarecrows to ward off virus
Some are elaborately dressed in military uniform or floral pyjamas, while others simply have stuffed bags with sunglasses perched on them for a head.
Armed with a stick, a floral-shirted scarecrow with a plastic pot for a head stands guard in front of a rural Cambodian home – a sentry erected by superstitious farmers to ward off Coronavirus.
Known as “Ting Mong” in Khmer, the creatively rendered scarecrows often pop up in villages that have been hard-hit by infectious diseases such as dengue or water-borne diarrhoea.
This time, “I’ve set up the Ting Mong to prevent Coronavirus from threatening my family,” said farmer Sok Chany, 45.
“This is my second one. The first one broke,” the 55-year-old said, adding that his scarecrow has been standing guard under sun and rain since April when the outbreak started spreading rapidly across Southeast Asia.
“We’ve been fine since the outbreak,” Ton Pheag said. “I’ll continue to leave it up as long as Covid still exists.”

^^^ Interesting. That article appeared in the Bangkok Post a couple of days ago. https://www.bangkokpost.com/world/20003 ... -off-virus
The link was sent to me from Bangkok with the comment, "I guess ONLY in Cambodia !!"
My reply was, "More likely a Thai deciding to have a laugh at the poor peasant neighbors next door.
Khmers have been setting up "Ting Mong" since forever. They are to scare off ghosts, evil spirits, etc.
I would be surprised if they don't have or do similar in Isaan.
Hey Somchai let's spin this story to make the Khmen look stupid, Hahaha."
