Oh, the joy!

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

I know it. I'm on 5am starts at the moment and I count on siesta during the day to keep the diabetes balanced - a couple of days without that hour or two of rest and I'm shot, so I'm really grateful.
Unfortunately, funerals don't count apparently. I wouldn't normally even comment - it's hard to complain about being inconvenienced by grief; but we've had 2 ceremonies closeby, one after the other, since Sunday. I am adapting to living in a storm of loudspeakers - even better, they've just fired up the generator which is even louder than the speakers.
Yeah, it's hard to begrudge a funeral. Although dueling speakers is a mongrel. Anyone else finding it really difficult to move around the city at the moment with the start of wedding season upon us? I've had a couple of trips where I've had to detour five times due to blocked roads, and that's just in BT.

I was considering a noisy, speaker-laden Hillsong event while I finish stripping out the current place!

Moving out on the weekend. Still have the current place until the end of the month, so will use the last 10 days to return the place to the way we found it.

The first time I heard this, I was sleeping at one of the in-law's homes. At 5 am this loud distorted music woke me up. I'm going WTF. Then I found out it was for my wedding ceremony. I'm more tolerant now. ;-)

Alot of roads blocked at the moment for "parties", they may look like weddings but alot of them are for some religious festival thats taking place at the moment, will have to ask the missus what the name is in the morning.

Oh, and yea, theres also a lot of weddings with the start of the wedding season.

Yeah, my lot have all cleared out to the village a couple of days ago to make a 'bon' at the in-laws house. Home tomorrow apparently.

What gets me is, with all the holidays over the past month, and another 3 days next week, the under-educated poor are all ready to down tools and make a 'bon' to bring good luck.

[Some of them don't realize how lucky they've got it already].

.
Kathina festival at the end of rainy season. General explanation here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathina

Can you explain how this is celebrated these days, Samouth or LS (or PSDK via your wife)? I presume that money is given rather than robes ? Is this the festival with the money trees,(you put a tree out for people to hang money on, which goes to the pagoda) or is that something else ?
