The Nationwide Orphan Scam

Post by ot mien kampf »

In Cambodia, it's almost impossible to escape the thousands of establishments catering to orphans, or invoking orphans to part barangs from their money.

However, it was in 1998 that the war against the KR ended for good. That is 18 years ago. By my napkin math, that means there shouldn't be much of a statistical difference in true, parent-less orphans below 18 compared to Vietnam or Thailand or Laos or Indonesia or the Philippines. Are we treating "economic orphans" like true orphans on an industrial scale because the industry has a vested interest in maintaining this disgusting farce?

Is it time to crush the orphanage industry for good?

Almost certainly true - except for Thailand which is a more developed nation and possibly Vietnam where investments in both education and healthcare are substantially higher than in Cambodia. Both healthcare and education play their part in preventing orphans... other than that; yes, it's time to end Cambodia's revolting orphanage industry and the same industry in the rest of SE Asia.

Columbia Researchers Probe Cambodia’s Orphanage Problem

In Cambodia, there have been numerous reports of children exploitation and abuse at child care institutions.

WASHINGTON DC—

Despite the official end of conflict in the country almost 20 years ago, Cambodia has seen ever increasing numbers of children living in orphanages. There is evidence suggesting that these places may be rife with exploitation and abuse. Most concerning, perhaps, it is common knowledge that many of the children in so-called orphanages are not orphans.

In order to help the government and civil society come up with policy reforms to address the issue, academics at New York’s Columbia University have carried out extensive research into the scope of the problem.

Lindsay Stark, an associate professor with the university’s program on forced migration and health, led the researchers. Her team confirmed that many of these children do have parents. Most are placed in child care institutions because parents “believe their children will get a better education, or will be in better care,” Stark told VOA Khmer.

“Really, the concern is creating a secondary or dual system where parents believe that their children are going to be better served by having them leave the family, instead of trying to find ways to alleviate poverty to increase access to better education,” she said.

Research in different settings has found that, in the long run, children living in . . . . .

It won't end as long as there is money from NGOs or charitable donations to be had. There will always be some extremely poor and unedcuated people. It will end when the government starts giving a toss about the children and cracks down on unscrupulous orphanage operators.

It's a race to populate the country before the Vietnamese fully take control. Well, that's what they believe. If they substituted Chinese for Vietnamese they would be somewhere nearer the truth.

My biggest concern with the orphanages is that it's not just the foreign Cristian's etc running them. The locals have picked up on the fact it's a great way to make money too.
Unsurprising really when you consider they copy any half decent business model. Strange the NGO's didn't see that coming. Or maybe they did and didn't give a fuck. Lots of abuses in those homes. Hard to say if there would be less abuse at their real homes, but at least they would be getting abused by someone that loves them. And that's important.
Of the more than 132 million children classified as orphans, only 13 million have lost both parents. Evidence clearly shows that the vast majority of orphans are living with a surviving parent grandparent, or other family member. 95 per cent of all orphans are over the age of five.

This definition contrasts with concepts of orphan in many industrialized countries, where a child must have lost both parents to qualify as an orphan. UNICEF and numerous international organizations adopted the broader definition of orphan in the mid-1990s as the AIDS pandemic began leading to the death of millions of parents worldwide, leaving an ever increasing number of children growing up without one or more parents. So the terminology of a ‘single orphan’ – the loss of one parent – and a ‘double orphan’ – the loss of both parents – was born to convey this growing crisis.

In keeping with this and the agency’s commitment to adapt to the evolving realities of the AIDS crisis, UNICEF commissioned an analysis of population household surveys across 36 countries. Designed to compare current conditions of orphans and non-orphans, the global analysis suggests we should further expand our scope, focusing less on the concept of orphanhood and more on a range of factors that render children vulnerable. These factors include the family's ownership of property, the poverty level of the household, the child’s relationship to the head of the household, and the education level of the child’s parents, if they are living.

In UNICEF’s experience, these are the elements that can help identify both children and their families – whether this term includes living parents, grandparents or other relatives – who have the greatest need for our support.

If I were being cynical, I would say it was born to realize its money making potential. These fuckers would make your granny out to be your uncle if they saw money in it.

Trying to find something that covers 2000-2015 but only this so far.
