we'll depends on the family you trying to marry. Most well educated women don't actually care. I suggest get to know the family especially who they really are behind your back. I have a friend whose madly inlove with the woman he disregarded the fact the family are just in it for the money. Now he works 2 full time jobs, because the womans family wants to buy a borey at an expensive location.

Khmer typically don’t move into a house together after the wedding. So no need for all the expensive appliances. Nor do they go on honeymoon afterwards.
The part I don’t get is inviting so many people to the wedding.
Missus would typically get invites from the hairdresser, the moto wash guy, etc., lots of unreleased people.
I always thought a wedding should be attended by people that are close to the bride and the groom.
But who am I to judge?
The whole village showed up to mine.
It’s their custom. As a foreigner, I was just along for the ride.

I paid the father in law. It didn't bother me. I didnt have a wedding though. I hate parties.

This happens when the other party you are marrying wants to show the whole village how capable their daughter is, to marry foreigner and shine on your in laws' faces hahanewkidontheblock wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 6:57 pm Khmer typically don’t move into a house together after the wedding. A bride price is necessary with Cambodian people to show the man is serious. Most Cambodian men sleep with a lot of girls. If good girls were easy to get, they would be taking advantage of them. Many do anyway. Having to pay a lot of money shows that this is the one he is serious with.
Even with the bride price, the divorce rate is very high. After they are married, many go to find another girl.

A bride price can’t be a necessary part of culture and at the same time be ineffective.explorer wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:24 am A bride price is necessary with Cambodian people to show the man is serious. Do you have any stats to back that up? Korea and the US used to lead the world with just over 50% divorce rate. I think the rate here is much lower than most western nations.explorer wrote:Even with the bride price, the divorce rate is very high. After they are married, many go to find another girl.

@explorer : If I understand correctly, you say that the man must pay a high bride price to show that he is serious, but he will probably divorce or cheat on his wife anyway. You have a very high opinion of Cambodian men it seems.Kammekor wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:33 amA bride price can’t be a necessary part of culture and at the same time be ineffective.explorer wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:24 am A bride price is necessary with Cambodian people to show the man is serious. Talk to Cambodian people. A lot of Cambodian men go to prostitutes after they are married. A lot of Cambodian men have other girlfriends after they are married. This is common knowledge among Cambodian people.

@explorer You are refuting your own argument above. You say that paying the bride price shows that the Cambodian man is serious, then you say that he will probably cheat and divorce his wife anyway, which implies that the bride price doesn't mean anything.Anchor Moy wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 1:14 pm@explorer : If I understand correctly, you say that the man must pay a high bride price to show that he is serious, but he will probably divorce or cheat on his wife anyway. I'm a bit lost on what you mean tbh.
