Is that the same book as Cambodia Noir? I wonder how many Cambodians are able to write a good yarn, or Thais. Does Thailand have home grown authors publishing?

A few Khmer are talented writers but because pirated copies are made immediately after publication, there is little to no profit from sales or royalties. Plus reading for pleasure is not very widespread in Cambodia, in fact reading period is not widespread.willyhilly wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2017 4:54 am Is that the same book as Cambodia Noir? Ok I remember now. This was the search for Cambodian writers who can write in English:
post167182.html?hilit=writers#p167182
I suppose there was a winner ? No, two winners ?

Thanks Phuket, Phnom Penh Noir that was it. I bought a copy from Monument because I like to support these things but I thought most of the stuff was pretty hackneyed. A few stories were quite original but like all those novels set in Thailand it's mostly bollocks.
I will buy this one on my Kindle because I think Iain is my facebook friend and I support publishing because I love books. But I yearn for the great SE Asian novel set in our era. There was so much great writing from the colonial past, from Conrad, Greene, Masters,Waugh,Maugham,Orwell and others.
At the moment I am reading a swag of very cheap books about the Vietnam War from men now in their late sixties and early seventies who have finally put pen to paper. They are all very good and some are really good, there is a lot that even I did not know about the war.
They were all affected to some degree, most very badly. Their whole lives were cruelled by the experience.

Now I am wondering who you are, but thanks
I have - to date - rejected 3 manuscripts that were the same old KR era stories. It's time to look forward and hear new voices. No rest for the wicked as we just launched a new search for the next 2 anthologies which will feature only Cambodian writers, with one being in Khmer and the other in English. Details are below if any of you have contacts in education or if you know a Cambodia who is interested in creative writing.
Saraswati Short Story Submissions
The Plan
To release two anthologies of short stories by exclusively Cambodian writers. One book will be in English, the other in Khmer. Release date will be the first quarter of 2018.
Working Title
Churning of the Ocean of Milk – English volume
Ko Samut Teuk Dos – Khmer volume
Themes
Hope. Dreams. The Future. Adversity. Love. Diversity. Equality. Mythology.
Guidelines
Stories can be between 1,000 and 8,000 words in length. Submissions in excess of 9,000 words will be returned to the writer. Writers may submit more than one story and may submit separate stories in both languages. Deadline for submissions is 30th November 2017.

The reading culture has grown hugely in the last 2 years with a lot of young Cambodians starting reading groups. But there is still a focus on non-fiction and 'self-help' books rather than fiction. Hopefully we can be a small part of changing that.
