Need help with inscriptions on coins of king Ang Duong

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Need help with inscriptions on coins of king Ang Duong

Post by inscriptor »

Hi all!

My name is Andrey Tretyakov, I am from Russia, the city of Moscow.

I am I coin collector since my childhood, and moreover I'm running world's probably best coin date converter (http://creounity.com/apps/time_machine/en/). It consists of 26 coin dating systems, incl. Cambodia.

Earlier this month one collector from the US got in touch with me and asked whether I know about the coinage of the Khmer ruler Ang Duong who was ruling the country in 19-th century.

I figured out that there is something I cannot understand, and therfore right now I am searching for a person who could help me :)

After diving deep into details I wrote an article (in Russian, so far, but one can use Google Translate): http://creounity.com/apps/time_machine/ ... hp&lang=ru

Here are in particular 2 things that I got stuck at:

1) On the coins of the 3rd type (http://creounity.com/apps/time_machine/ ... ple-03.png) dates above and to the right from the bird are written using an angled script (I mean numerals are written with straight lines, not rounded ones).

2390 and 1209 seem to be written like this: http://creounity.com/apps/time_machine/ ... pe_iii.png, but numeral "2" seems to be written in different form, in this case.

so, actually the questions are as follows:

1a) are you aware about this "angled" script for Khmer numerals? Why is it so atypical compared with the common numerals script with rounded shapes?

1b) why is "2" seem to be written differently in this two pieces?

2) It is believed that the 4-th date is written above the bird. Here's the detailed view of those on the coins of all types: http://creounity.com/apps/time_machine/ ... th_era.png. Could you please translate and explain the meaning of these inscriptions?

I'll be extremely grateful for the help with the above-mentioned issues (1a, 1b and 2)!

Having a quick look at your website, I would think that you are probably the authority on this subject.

I found this discussion on coins of that era, maybe it can help, or lead you to an answer elsewhere. http://ki-media.blogspot.com/2012/05/bl ... _7349.html

Good luck.

Also now I cannot understand why all availble English sources point the official coronation date as March 7, 1848, whereas BE 2390, CS 1209 and SE 1769 all point at the year of 1847.

Any ideas?
