Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

That was years ago, why post it now? I don't believe people should suffer for the sins of their fathers. The circumstances around her father's last couple of years must have been quite rough for a child, with the inner revolts and him being tried by his own movement and placed under house arrest. It's an interesting story but she has done nothing wrong so I don't feel comfortable when the spotlight is put on someone innocent.

I agree with you too John. It was a link to something recent. I did think it was a interesting read.

Incredibly incoherent writing. The same things are written over and over again, and he can't seem to decide what age the daughter was.
Seems more like a draft than an excerpt from a book.
“It was a way of telling me that he was preparing to die,” she told me as she stood crying over his corpse that day, their 13 year old daughter grasping her hand tightly.

Pol Pot’s wife, a 40-year-old former ammunition porter who was using the alias Muon was clutching the hand of her 12-year-old daughter, who was using the alias Mul.

Thayer's dead right about everyone wanting some answers. Surely her new dad would know, or others in the Pol Pot - Leng Sary clique? The ones still alive that is.
Good books on the subject by this group in English?

I've been waiting for his book to finally come out, for years. Doesn't appear that it will happen. A shame.

Me too, it was slated to come out in 1999 or so and I saw reviews of it, there are also publication dates from then but I could never find it in Foyles or The Strand or anywhere. There are excerpts from his long awaited book on his site, and you can even buy it, or at least a preliminary draft there I think. It was a book many were looking forward to, but then I think he got sidetracked in litigation after his Pol Pot interview ( one of the only ones he ever gave) was ripped of by Newsweek and other publications who didn't pay him. As far as I know he did eventually win a fair amount of compensation. He has some amazing tales, but has always seemed very partisan. His sympathies were with the devil, and their ineffectual allies. He was always been very critical of the regime, which led to him getting made a person non grata for some time. I don't think that ever stopped him though. I think he has an incredible story, but as someone above mentioned, he needs an editor.

Her whole life has been with these people. That whole Pailin/ Malai area is run by former DK. That was the deal when Ieng Sary defected in 1996. It was a great move. They've mellowed out with age and in the spirit of reconciliation people just have to move and make peace, even among different factions. The resistance movements had their points too, it's not really helpful to try and start witch hunts anymore.
