Buddhists across Kingdom gear up for Meak Bochea day
19 February 2019 | 07:53 ICT
Ministry of Cults and Religion spokesman Seng Somony said his department expects many Buddhists to celebrate Meak Bochea Day on Tuesday, while Cambodia’s youth were also urged to fully engage with their cultural heritage on one of the Kingdom’s most important holidays.

“We observed that many Buddhists celebrate this holiday everywhere in Phnom Penh and in the provinces throughout Cambodia."

“They will celebrate Meak Bochea Day according to the traditions of their own provinces, while in Phnom Penh, there will be a major celebration at Phnom Preah Reach Trop, also known as Oudong Mountain."

“Cambodian Buddhists strictly follow the teachings of the Buddha, so there will be many youths and Buddhists celebrating this holiday,” he said.

Somony said that every year the National Committee for Organising National and International Festivals instructed provincial authorities and the country’s over 3,000 pagodas to celebrate Meak Bochea Day.

It is celebrated during the full moon based on the traditional Cambodian calendar. It is a public holiday in the Kingdom.

Meak Bochea Day to be Celebrated Tomorrow
AKP Phnom Penh, January 27, 2021 --

Cambodia will celebrate the annual Meak Bochea Day on the top hill of Preah Reachtroap (Oudong), Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province, where a stupa of Buddha’s relics is located, on Jan. 28.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the National Assembly-Senate Relations and Inspection H.E. Mrs. Men Sam An will preside over this year’s celebration with the participation of high-ranking officials of the Senate, National Assembly and Government and many Buddhist followers.

As many as 300 Buddhist monks will join the celebration for blessing.

The directive of the Royal Government of Cambodia and the safety measures guided by the Ministry of Health will be well applied on the occasion in order to prevent possible community transmission of COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recent announcement of the National Committee for Organising National and International Festivals.

Cambodia, as well as other Buddhism-practicing countries, holds the event annually. It is a public holiday and an occasion where the Buddhist followers are reminded of Buddha and his teachings.

Meak Bochea commemorates a great meeting of Buddha and 1,250 disciples and it is the day where Buddha announced his passing away, which would happen three months later. He correctly predicted his death and it is now remembered as Visak Bochea Day (which also happens to be his birthday and enlightenment day).

I saw all the Cambodian flags and had to ask one of the guys I work with what the occasion was. It was always a holiday before, I'm not surprised when they get rid of "Children's Day"or "Human Rights Day" but I thought they would keep the religious ones.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

It was stricken from the official Cambodian holiday list this year. But it’s an important Buddhist holiday. On the way back from temple. Missus’ first time. Will post later.

Māgha Pūjā មាឃបូជា: (Sacrificing (Pūjea) - in the month - "Māgha"/ Meagh(a))

It's the secound highest buddhist fest actually, also called "Sangha-day" (community day) and to stricken it would be like stricken eastern in central European country.

It's not to be though as a fault of governing institution but can be expected as a poorly informing from the Sangha of monks itself since they are generally not good informed.

As it is not only community day but also "peace-day" (Khmer/Khema-day) within community, this day, if people in charge would be good informed, would actually used even expanded and used good as being total in line with all high hold things. Removing it from national holidays, if informed, would be somehow as losing interest in "Birth/Stand - Teaching/Doctrine - King". So may there those who are able to inform those in charge well to correct the mistake possible.
Magha Puja
This day, sometimes called "Sangha Day," commemorates the spontaneous assembly of 1,250 arahants in the Buddha's presence. One thousand of the gathered monks had previously achieved Awakening upon hearing the Buddha's delivery of the Fire Sermon; the remaining 250 were followers of the elder monks Ven. Moggallana and Ven. Sariputta. To mark this auspicious gathering, the Buddha delivered the Ovada-Patimokkha Gatha , a summary of the main points of the Dhamma, which the Buddha gave to the assembly before sending them out to proclaim the doctrine. [Suggested reading: "Dhamma for Everyone " by Ajaan Lee.]
Ovāda-pāṭimokkha Gāthā

Khantī paramaṃ tapo tītikkhā
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ vadanti buddhā,
Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī
Samaṇo hoti paraṃ viheṭhayanto

Patient forbearance is the foremost austerity.
Liberation is foremost: that's what the Buddhas say.
He is no monk who injures another;
nor a contemplative, he who mistreats another.

Sabba-pāpassa akaraṇaṃ,
Kusalassūpasampadā,
Sacitta-pariyodapanaṃ:
Etaṃ buddhāna-sāsanaṃ.

The non-doing of any evil,
The performance of what's skillful,
The cleansing of one's own mind:
This is the Buddhas' teaching.

Anūpavādo anūpaghāto
Pāṭimokkhe ca saṃvaro
Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṃ
Pantañca sayan'āsanaṃ.
Adhicitte ca āyogo:
Etaṃ buddhāna-sāsananti.

Not disparaging, not injuring,
Restraint in line with the monastic code,
Moderation in food,
Dwelling in seclusion,
Commitment to the heightened mind:
This is the Buddhas' teaching.

It will be Māgha Pūjā មាឃបូជា: day, on 16. Feb. Maybe it's for some helpful to join and take part in near community more direct, knowing it before, and share own pictures the day after, or at night.

much merits, maybe even meeting those teaching the Dhamma, and get bond for release from every bond and community.
