Has anyone been regularly using Google Translate for Khmer?

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Has anyone been regularly using Google Translate for Khmer?

Post by OrangeDragon »

I do. Now and then at least. And I have my wife double check it and help me with corrections... which I correct IN their system as well (when you click a translated word it gives you options to suggest alternatives). I've noticed it getting better compared to when it first came out, so I must not be the only one doing it. Anyone else here doing anything similar to help it along?

Now that you've made that feature public, Google will need to fit it with a Breathalyser - or ban CEO/440 posters from suggesting changes after 3.30pm!

I use Google Translate for Khmer sometimes to quickly find a spelling or translation. But I never helped to correct their system.
I mostly use Orkida and the LEMON dictionaries together (the LEMON dictionary helps me to confirm whatever Orkida has translated from English to Khmer.)

I use it.

Definitely getting better, but still close to worthless.

It's good for a solid laugh now and again.

For me it generally allows me to get the "gist" of what is being said. Particularly useful in regards to my teen nephew's facebook posts with his friends to make sure he's not up to no good. ;-) he's my ward, so my responsibility, and while he's generally a VERY good boy... he's still a teenager.

Oh! I should've precised that I only look up words on Google Translate, and not entire sentences or texts.

Considering only vocabulary, Google Translate has a pretty good arsenal.

Although with the way the locals use chili, you have to wonder whether pepper spray would deter them or just whet their appetite.

Worthless? I think I can get the gist of most news articles when using it so far from worthless for me.

What do you use it for that makes you think it is almost worthless? Translating bar girls Facebook posts?
