Hey Jamie i wish i can help you with this. I actually don't know where to start. What i know is that we put adjective before noun.

For example in English you would say: Red Book, but we say Book Red.

That's one thing that's intrigued me - constantly hearing that Khmer sentence structure is the same SVO order as English (so it's easy to learn, right?) and then both Khmer and westerners immediately give examples that are not the same.

Oop. I meant we put noun before adjective. Oh gosh, I really can't remember about Khmer grammar.

yes i have noticed this, but didnt realize it was a set rule, its been a long time since i actually learned about grammar and is so programmed into your head from a young age, its not something that i think much about

Hey Jamie, This is one of the biggest problem for those who learn how to read and write khmer. It is way too complicated. I was just discussing with my Australian friend the other day about this. Right now he is learning to read and write. He said this is one of the reason that prevented his learning to be developed.

Normally we will have a space in between if it is a compound sentence or after we have a complete sentence. We also give it a space after the word និង/ហើយ (and), and ឬ (or).

For example:
១ ​Shu Qi មាន​វ័យ​៣៩ឆ្នាំ​ហើយ ​ប៉ុន្តែ​នាង​បាន​ថត​ភាពយន្ត​ចំនួន​៨០​រឿង ​និង​រឿង​​ភាគ​ទូរទស្សន៍​ចំនួន​៥​រឿង​ផ្សេង​ទៀត។ នាង​បាន​ធ្វើ​ការ​ជា​តារា​ម៉ូដែល​ក្រៅ​ម៉ោង​នៅ​ពេល​ដែល​នាង​រៀន​នៅ​វិទ្យាល័យ​ដើម្បី​ជួយ​ផ្គត់ផ្គង់​ជីវភាព​គ្រួសារ​។ នៅ​អាយុ​១៦​ឆ្នាំ​​​​នាង​​​បាន​សម្ដែង​ក្នុង​​ភាពយន្ត​​កូន​ជ្រូក។

Here is an example how one sentence can be confused according to how it written:

កូនសម្ដេចឪខ្មៅ ៖ Kid is white why the dad is black. កូន (kid) ស(white) ម្ដេច(why) ឳ(dad) ខ្មៅ(black)

កូនសម្ដេចឪខ្មៅ ៖ The kid of the king is black. កូន(kid) សម្ដេចឪ(King) ខ្មៅ(black).

This one sentence has two meanings.

My suggestion: you should try to break down sentence in to pieces by word and try to remember. So when you seen them together with other words you will recognize them. Good luck. Don't be hesitated to ask me everything involving khmer language. i will try to help.

ឲ្យ this is what I've been using but I've also seen it used like this as well.

អោយ និង ឱ្យ

Before you can write both, however recently The Royal Academy of Cambodia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Academy_of_Cambodia
determined that we and all the news and medias have to write ឱ្យ instead of អោយ. We have to follow the way of Choun Nath's style of writing and stop following the​ way of Keng Vannsak style of writing.

ឱ្យ: Choun Nath's style.
