Fucking Sissy

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Fucking Sissy

Post by taabarang »

I haven't posted Khmer idioms here in a while. It looked like song lyrics were in and in general I have an aversion to most, but not all Khmer pop music. I think it's more of a generational than a cultural hang-up.

So, my new contribution is the male insult "a chek" or "a jek" if you prefer. It is used to describe males who are effeminate, perhaps gay and it's literally translation is fucking banana.

There is no way to faithfully transcribe Khmer phonemes into a Latin alphabet. My test is simple. If I speak Khmer with native speakers and they understand that is sufficient. I transcribe as best I can. All the rest is pompous pedantry.

yup, you transcribed it the simplified "Khmer way" , which is the same way i do it, to save confusion,
its near impossible to write the true sound in Latinized script even if you write it how you think it sounds,
a French or Russian guy/girl trying to read it will still pronounce it wrong due to them pronouncing vowels and stuff differently

Whilst I appreciate your grasp of English there’s no need to be a prick. I was just giving an alternative so non Khmer speakers could try that.

That I will Jamie, for many years now I have been running my Khmer past her first before I unleash it on the public in general for three good reasons: 1) her English is good 2) even though she's a country girl and not a bar girl, she's no prude and 3) I damn well better get it right so I don't embarrass her in the presence of friends and neighbors.

You bunch of bananas.

Fun Fact : In the khmer dub version of Titanic, Jack is pronounced "Jek" which somehow makes the movie hilarious everytime Rose is calling him.
