Haha, yeah that's one reason why Khmer is so difficult, the spoken language is a whole different world, especially PP dialect.
You can't really learn khmer unless you learn to read it.
If you're studying the language without reading it, you'll be reliant on terrible romanizations that vary from author to author, it will make it much more difficult.

Thanks, so far for the pointers.
Being dependent upon working out of Europe for now is a bit of limitation. However, while I'm looking for a job in SEA/Asia generally, I'd still be out of the country for periods, as it's the nature of the business. I'm sure she'll get her head around English faster than I shall with Khmer, but I'll not be giving up.
Once I'm spending more time over there, it'll be hopefully easier to get enrolled in something constructive.

haha yeah, and learning to read but without having the ear for it too,
its like learning written English then coming up North and trying to understand us, or visa versa, if i actually wrote down how i talked most here would struggle to understand my accent/dialect in written form lol

i do know people that speak great khmer but cant read, but as you say, when it comes to writing it down its very difficult

it is possible if youve got the spare time, i still have some stuff i used with my private tutor if you PM me your email i can email you the beginners coarse, it is very good
and you can post any questions here now you have your own thread and me and the others will try answer them the best we can

What books are you guys using? I'm pretty familiar with most of the materials. There was an online khmer language pack in a torrent a few years ago,
I still have that, that contained most of the available stuff, I still use it to study.

not used books since school tbh, apart from dictionaries, the dictionary is my best friend, just learning new words and deeper understanding of words and their uses
i do most my studying by translating songs and other things lol
the books teach useful formal stuff, which is good to start with, but getting by day to day with Colloquial Khmer requires more work and practice, its almost a different language lol forever learning lol
but thats what keeps it interesting

Baht depends whether it's a rising or falling tone.

Baht = yes. Baht Bong = yes brother freightdog.

Baht? (rising tone) = What? Say again.

KOW = Kingdom of Wonder.


I often get a laugh when I say "G'doy ma vear". Ask your boss for the translation.
"Joy!" can be used to express exasperation or frustration.

Khmer is not a tonal language.....
