Dear all tourists and other foreigners visiting and living..

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

I'm really interested in this. What Cambodians feels about tourists?

How foreigners should dress and behave to doesn't bother them?

For example, I'm going in less than 1 week to PP, I'll be there at least two months. I've read that you shouldn't do anything with your left hand because that one is used for "private business". Surprise! I'm left handed with an almost-useless right hand. They're going to feel offended when I eat?

And I've the same doubts about the clothes. I usually don't cover my shoulders, I use skirts and shorts... Reading this thread make me feel like :dragonchase:

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Just don't walk around without a shirt.

I'm also left handed and have never thought I was being rude.

Just be polite in your own way and you will get along fine.

so it is ok for millions of tourists to visit temples full of bare breasted apsaras and spend heaps among the freely thrown rubbish by the self respecting locals who respect each other from top to bottom.

as long as they wear shirts.

is that right?

That's a Muslim thing, Cambodians will not be offended by you using your left-hand, my missus and half of her siblings are all left-handed and use their left hands for everything, including eating. The only Cambodians it may possibly offend would be the Khmer Cham (Khmer Muslims), but I highly doubt they'd make a big deal of it anyway.

Cambodians are totally cool. You just need to bear in mind that modesty is important, although you can do as you like. Even if they think you are ill-mannered, they probably won't say anything. If in doubt ask someone.(Can I go in here dressed like this?)
Learn some khmer, smile a lot, talk to people and whatever happens stay chilled. :D

If you want a Khmer females perspective. My girl pointed out a few girls on Koh Rong this holiday that WERE dressed like they were on a beach in Rio not Cambodia. Cover your shoulders. Bikinis are not cool, but your western and every western girl does it at the beach. Take note of the Khmer woman's swim attire. I've noticed handfuls with Bikinis, buy most still go in regular shirts n tee shirt.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...
