Cultural Villages for Cambodian Workers in Japan

Japan to host 4 Cambodian villages

February 03, 2019
The Japan Cambodia Interactive Association (JCIA) plans to create cultural villages in four locations where Cambodians who work/live in Japan can meet and celebrate while they are far from home.

Hou Vudthy, Undersecretary of State at the Labor Ministry, said on Friday that the JCIA wants the villages so that families of Cambodian workers in Japan have a place to come to and celebrate traditional Khmer festivals together.

“Our workers and trainees can congregate at a cultural village to entertainment themselves or play traditional games together. It is also a place where Khmer culture and traditional are showed to Japanese people and other foreigners; once they know [about it] and they will come to visit more and more.”

Vudthy averred that the Minister of Labor agrees that the project will facilitate reunions with the relatives and friends of the Khmer in Japan.

JCIA Director Fumio Yamada said that previously, Cambodians working in Japan were few in number, but now they are over 9,000. Yet when there is a Cambodian national festival, they have no place to get together and celebrate.
