Cambodian Kitchens

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Cambodian Kitchens

Post by Luigi »

Or more precisely the lack of. My point. Cambodians love there food. Void of imagination that it is. But the Khmer style housing is so lacking in the kitchen department. No counter space for prep. No elec. outlets. No venting. No lighting. Not even a counter to have a breakfast. Tiny fridge. No ovens. A two burner hob is all you get.
For the first 6 months here I thought that is was just the way the rentals were. But after being in a few average (not rich Khmer) kitchens i realized that is the norm. What's up with that?
Pointless to make comparisons with the west & Cambodia.

Because prep and cooking is all done on the ground, and usually outside.

My first place was an apartment in a block of six owned by my landlady & husband, and their daughter, who lived in the two ground floor ones.

Despite them all having a "kitchen" as you describe, they still cooked on a charcoal fire on the ground outside at the rear. Even washing their dishes in plastic basins out there despite having benches with sinks inside. Tradition and old habits die hard I guess.

edit: like PSD says.

That is part of what I find so confounding. We at one time lived in caves. But most do not have to live cave like today. I still like the cooking with charcoal part. But I stand up to do.

Yea, you could be right about the no fridges an kitchen sinks but you got to admit these houses have good ventilation.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Do you mean in the first pic? It is the stems of the water hyacinth, or something like that.
