Meum est propositum in taberna mori,

tunc cantabunt letius angelorum chori:

The OP was not fake news
although my headline was. (click-bait)

The story itself did not say Zero was invented in Cambodia, just that it was the first recorded example found of a zero as we use it today.
It said this demonstrated that the zero originated in The East, not in the Middle East.
So this new report from india actually confirms that.

The Cambodian zot is probably the same zot as the Indian one, given the free flowing influences between the two "nations" back then.

Good find, SpigsOverEazy!

Very very important contribution.

Looking at the article. It states that the Khmer had it by AD 690. But there’s no clear connection that it was passed along to Arab traders. Because of the Crusades, it was passed along to the Europeans. With the publication in AD 1202 in Nantes, it become widely part of Western knowledge.
My guess is that Arab traders along the coast and upriver came across it.

Spread Greek culture across the known world. Educated Romans spoke Greek. Ordinary Romans spoke Latin. The lower classes spoke ghetto Latin - otherwise know as French, Spanish, Italian, etc., Romance Languages.

Formed professional, standing armies - the legion is the basis of every military organization ever since - to conquer their way across the world.

Built enormous structures - aqueducts, bath houses, forums, arenas - to dazzle locals they conquered and thus Romanize them.

The Romans did so much and more, that when the Roman Empire actually fell, it began, ‘The Dark Ages’.

Ghetto Latin  you mean spoken by dark-skinned Romans wearing these ?

French is a mix where Greek holds at least 10 % of the words we use and up to 25 % indirectly. Like the metric system vocabulary.
Greek is still the main basis of science-based vocabulary, and is a solid basis for froggy thinking , theories and prospective stuff of any kind in any science branch.
The main diplomatic language of reference was Latin up until French took over it, to sign treaties and other official stuff beetween countries.
Turns out lower classes gibberish went well over less appealing official other dialects from hairy tribes here and there.

So, it was low-class, but we turned it optimized-high-class back on it's feets, with high heels instead of the previous low-class sandals.

Everyone in Roman society wore sandals.
Or went barefoot.

They must have stolen the idea from the Khmer.

Just kidding.

I AM quite tired tbf, and I'm also trying to catch a mosquito literally as I type this, but I'm struggling here.

In what context did someone invent a zero ? Doesn't zero just mean that there's none of something ?

If someone had asked a person pre-683 how many wings do you have, what would they have said ? They must have understood the concept of them having no ie zero wings ? I don't get it.

Edit: sorry, I hadn't read page 2 when I wrote that. Goodnight.

If you're not familiar with the film the Life of Brian, you might not have got the reference. Interesting information though nonetheless. Wrt your comment about the building work they did, my understanding is that the roof of the Parthenon remained the biggest diameter concrete dome ever built until the 2oth century.
