Cambodia: From Pol Pot to HE and Beyond by Sebastian Strangio
I've just seen that Sebastian Strangio is bringing out a new book on Cambodia in a couple of weeks. I'm a fan of HE's Cambodia, so am passing on the info in case anyone else is interested.
Blurb from Amazon.
Cambodia: From Pol Pot to HE and Beyond – October 20, 2020
A fascinating analysis of the recent history of the beautiful but troubled Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia
To many in the West, the name Cambodia still conjures up indelible images of destruction and death, the legacy of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime and the terror it inflicted in its attempt to create a communist utopia in the 1970s. Sebastian Strangio, a journalist based in the capital city of Phnom Penh, now offers an eye-opening appraisal of modern-day Cambodia in the years following its emergence from bitter conflict and bloody upheaval.
In the early 1990s, Cambodia became the focus of the UN’s first great post–Cold War nation-building project, with billions in international aid rolling in to support the fledgling democracy. But since the UN-supervised elections in 1993, the nation has slipped steadily backward into neo-authoritarian rule under Prime Minister HE. Behind a mirage of democracy, ordinary people have few rights and corruption infuses virtually every facet of everyday life. In this lively and compelling study, the first of its kind, Strangio explores the present state of Cambodian society under HE’s leadership, painting a vivid portrait of a nation struggling to reconcile the promise of peace and democracy with a violent and tumultuous past.

Strangio is always fab. I am certainly going to save up and buy a legal copy when i can afford it.
(ie, i am not going to steal a copy, and Sebastian's livelihood, just coz i so easily can from the internet)
But remember, this is Cambodia thru the lens settings of a westerner. Others will see some of the basic foundations of his analysis thru very different eyes, and give them very different weightings.
This is natural and his take-aways are still valid and insightful of course, but it is always worth keeping that ^^ in mind.

Define “based.” If the book is all it’s purported to be, I can’t imagine that ever happening again except under really good (spy level) cover.Anchor Moy wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 12:21 am Sebastian Strangio, a journalist based in the capital city of Phnom Penh, ast.
Kudos to him for taking a substantial risk to life & limb.
(From his bio: He is currently based in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he is an affiliated researcher at the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development at Chiang Mai University.)

This is NOT a new book by Sebastian - it is a re-issue in paperback from Yale University Press of his existing title with an additional subtitle. Previously Yale licensed Silkworm in Thailand to publish a paperback edition for sale in South East Asia only but that arrangement has come to an end.
There is no new material in the book - a short afterword might have been added but as I haven't seen a finished copy, I cannot confirm that...

Yes, I doubt he'll be welcome here for some time, not so much because of his book but more because of his recent scathing articles.Stiliko wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 1:31 pmDefine “based.” If the book is all it’s purported to be, I can’t imagine that ever happening again except under really good (spy level) cover.Anchor Moy wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 12:21 am Sebastian Strangio, a journalist based in the capital city of Phnom Penh, ast.

If this is true ^^^ about it just being a re-issue, Sebastian has gone down in my estimation.
(i just wrote a post on how i believe he has survived such hard-core reporting for so long - is because of his obvious sincerity and integrity which even a Kh big-wig can respect)
I can find no reference to this in any of the promotional material - including SS's own website.
Sorry, but i am sceptical
Can we have a link to this info, please?

u'd think he woud at least have changed the description,....To many in the West, the name Cambodia still conjures up indelible images of destruction and death, the legacy of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime and the terror it inflicted in its attempt to create a communist utopia in the 1970s. Sebastian Strangio, a journalist based in the capital city of Phnom Penh, now offers an eye-opening appraisal of modern-day Cambodia in the years following its emergence from bitter conflict and bloody upheaval.

Strangio's new book was published a week ago, and it's called In the Dragon's Shadow, focusing on Chinese influence in the ASEAN region.
