Thanks Rama - a bit of research (asking a lot of locals, checking word lists and dictionaries, Google Translate) tells me 'bumblebee' exists in the Khmer lexicon, but so does 'dodo' apparently, and neither is known colloquially.

We will have to go with 'Happy Bee' or something similar in Khmer. Is there a well known, positive word for 'benevolent' or 'charity' that would work with 'bee'?

You're right to check all your Khmer with a Khmer, but that could work? It sounds good to my English man's ears - "ឃ្ផុម កុសល / K'mom Kosal"

For the lazy connotation, Cambodian used cicada to represent lazy people and ant for hard-working.

We weren't looking for lazy, more like wandering. Bumble has negative connotations in English which are not related to bumblebee.

When Khmer people ask now what bumblebee means (which nowadays only happens 10 or so times a day while waiting at the lights) we just say "big happy bee" and they smile.

As much as everyone likes to make fun of, or run down Mormons on their bikes,, I now have a lot of respect for these guys and what they do, now that I have met some of them. There are always 3 or 4 that live in a 6 bed apartment [ rented by the church ] just a few doors from my place in Takhmau and I have spoken to them many times. It appears they do a six month stint in different places around the world and all of them that arrive here speak Khmer and get on with the locals very well.
