Sey, Cambodia’s Favorite Pastime
The sight of a group of people standing around in a circle while kicking a feathery shuttlecock is not an uncommon one in Cambodia.
Many often flock to the riverside in Phnom Penh or anywhere with enough space to play a friendly game of jianzi, colloquially known as sey.
The game calls for a group of about five to 10 players who stand in a circle and kick a sey to one another, with the ultimate goal being to keep the shuttlecock airborne for as long as possible.
Traditionally, a sey is made out of four feathers affixed to a rubber sole, but today, many are made using plastic discs instead.
The game originated from China’s Han dynasty more than 2,000 years ago, but is still played to this day.
The game is still deemed a national sport in China today, with Beijing often organizing elaborate inter-city tournaments. Last year, Beijing also organized its first women-only tournament following strong demand from female players.
The game is also considered a national sport in Vietnam and the Philippines...
