low key, not too many tourists and people bars??

This is the part of the forum where we discuss Cambodia's nightlife! While most bars, nightclubs, pubs, beer gardens, and hostess bars are in Phnom Penh, we discuss the Cambodian nightlife across all of Cambodia, including Siem Reap, Kampot, and Sihanoukville. The main nightlife areas in Phnom Penh are on Street 136, Street 130, Street 110 and Street 51, but there are other party spots that aren't girlie bars where expats, tourists, and locals drink until the sun comes up. Feel free to post specials and promotions that relate to nighttime fun!

low key, not too many tourists and people bars??

Post by catchy818 »

Hey i really want to find a bar in PP that doesnt have such a large crowd. Im not really into the big crowds but rather just want to hang out, drink a beer with a girl. I heard st 136 and 172 is a no go for this, for it is the main areas for tourist. Would there be a st. where tourists dont really go to but has some bars? thanks

Take a walk and try checking out the empty bars in that area. Or are you looking for Khmer places with no westerners and where no one speaks English ?

Try Golden Sorya Mall (GSM), but face the stigma of being a sex tourist.

So is it reopened now, I never get around that area?

Tony Akdeniz, owner of the nearby Mr Mediterranean restaurant, said he was grateful for the GSM renovations and for the overall improvements he had seen in the 10 months since he opened his business.
Akdeniz added that he had been told by officials in charge of the renovation that the new project was set to open in April, slightly after Khmer New Year. Sou Ieng declined to comment on the renovations yesterday.

But a decrease in prostitution and drugs could have a negative impact on some of the businesses in the area, which have come to rely on the patrons drawn to the seedier side of GSM.general-chatter/golden-sorya-mall-being ... 28-70.html

Ok, I'll let you in on a secret. Phnom Penh is a vast and rapidly expanding city. It has many districts. There is a small central district next to the river called Daun Penh. In this area you will find streets such as 104, 108, 110, all the way up to 136 where there are quite a few hostess bars. Pasteur or 51 has a few similar places between 154 and 174, and 172 has a handful of hostess bars. That's a tiny area, and nothing like that exists west of Monivong. There are quite a few ordinary bars and restaurants too, these are spread out in Daun Penh and Chamkar Mon but aren't so visible outside of there. Cambodians don't really do bars, they go to beer-gardens and eat or KTVs and sing. I'm quite fond of the traditional mom & pop beer shop thing. The one I've been hitting for years near my house sets up some plastic chairs and a metal table and then it's just self-service until we leave. I've met some amazing people there over the years, a whole lot of soldiers from different sides, surgeons, officials, young tech savvy guys, and even the odd barang!

See that orange bit in the middle? That's Daun Penh. The red bit is Prampi Makara which is built up but relatively untouched by recent developments. There are a fair few whiteys in Tuol Kok (yellow) and Chamkarmon (pink) too, and some facilities for them. Beyond that you're getting into bandit country, don't go there.
