Explain a barfine please?

This is the part of the forum where we discuss Cambodia's nightlife! While most bars, nightclubs, pubs, beer gardens, and hostess bars are in Phnom Penh, we discuss the Cambodian nightlife across all of Cambodia, including Siem Reap, Kampot, and Sihanoukville. The main nightlife areas in Phnom Penh are on Street 136, Street 130, Street 110 and Street 51, but there are other party spots that aren't girlie bars where expats, tourists, and locals drink until the sun comes up. Feel free to post specials and promotions that relate to nighttime fun!

personally i think he did one better than that by refunding the bar fine.

i suspect even the bar owner that says he'd sack the girl and replace it would likely have a different tune when it really came up. all well and good to say that to some guy sitting at the bar, a different story when someone comes knocking for their phone. here's a nice story that relates:

girl works in non hostess bar 1 as a waitress. frequent customer of bar 1 takes out a hostess from bar 2 on a barfine. hostess is SEEN slipping behind the counter and grabbing a purse (where the waitresses keep them) and fucking off. girl complains to owner of bar 1, who then goes to the customer and later the owner of bar 2. owner of bar 2 confronts the hostess, she confesses but no longer has the purse or the money that was in it. owner of bar 2 says "nothing to do then" and considers it done. not their problem. the girl wasn't working for them when it happened and it was nice of them to try and help resolve it at all, but they're not going to pay for it.

not even a your word against hers sort of thing... purely a "yep, she did it... but that's not my problem, it's between you and her." attitude about it. it's close to the same as if you were to bump into a girl you know from a hostess bar while out getting coffee one afternoon, take her home for some fun, and it happened. not the bar's problem, as she wasn't on the clock. because they know her they may try and help you resolve it, but i think it's unlikely to ever seem them pony up the cash for it.

and you may think "it's only the one girl, and she only worked there X days" but HOW did she come to work there? is she friends/family with one (or more) of the others there? will sacking her mean they leave as well?

apparently (from talking to hostess bar owners i've become friends with) this is how a lot of them get their girls... friends and family. sacking one could leave a place down to only a few (or no) girls in no time. not like they have a shortage of employment opportunities.

True that.

I still think it shows he's a lame owner if he couldn't even spot the guy a drink that just got his phone stolen from one of his staff.

As I mentioned before I have been once or twice because a girl I was with at the time was friends with the "woman in charge" OK this is a few years back but the guy who I thought to be the owner said it was not his bar but the bar of "the woman in charge" I use quotes because I assumed her to be his wife/girlfriend but he insisted it was a business relationship. The girl I was with was insistent, "no girlfriend him" :? OK this was a few years ago and things might have changed I dont know. From what the OP says it now seems he is accepting ownership all be it in a "lame way" as GM says.

As much as you like the confines of ones own home...its best to never take a bar girl you just met back too your place.

Although I do it frequently, I agree that's it's a terrible idea.

As a bar owner I hear a lot of stories. Of the girl ripped me off stories I'd say 99% (rounding) are Martini/GSM/ Heart/Pontoon pick ups rather than hostess bars.

Yep. And it's because the bar owners at the hostess bars typically take it pretty seriously.

"99%" is probably pretty accurate.

This thread is a good example of why hostess bar owners need to take it pretty seriously.

Explain a barfine please?

I agree. I think that it's one of the big advantages for customers going to hostess bars - the girls won't steal from you in 99% of cases.

Some months ago an elderly Australian accountant came in to our bar. I overheard him say that a hostess bar girl had stolen his (fake) iPhone from his room the previous night and that when he told the owner the next day, she didn't believe him but said he should come back to the bar later and talk to the girl.

I said that I would go with him as I was interested in the owner's response. Off we went to the bar, one of the sleazier ones in 136.

The girl came out of the bar to confront the Aussie guy. I say 'girl', in fact it was the ROUGHEST ladyboy I have ever seen, with a growly voice to match.

Not believing that this could possibly be the girl in question, I asked the guy if this was his date the previous night. He confirmed that she was. I asked if he knew she was a ladyboy. He was very surprised and said no. But then added "Oh I thought it was a bit strange that she didn't take off her underwear when we slept together".

At this point I decided to leave him to his fate. I told him that the ladyboy probably did take his phone but he was unlikely to get it back, and I suggested he stick to the more well known bars in future.
