Wing Bank Good or Bad?

Post by rockyboy612 »

Wing recently turned themselves into a Bank.
Was really nice and convenient before but I wonder how many got into the same endless spiraling crap I have, and maybe someone solved it.

Old wing allowed me to login and use their app with my phone number no complicated registration, although I have my simcard registered with Smart officially with my old passport. Basically now my phone number and my new passport don't match which wing needs. Wing told me update it with Smart and specifically get a letter from Smart as proof that I updated and it was me. To get a letter from smart needs to get escalated way up.

It seems too much trouble to fix a problem that wing actually caused.

Given that they (WING) are trying to up their standards by adding security layers like these, but it seems they just made themselves extra difficult to deal with. The good old days where verifying your identity can be as simple as the wing agent calling your number, if it rings then it's you.

Looking for opinions of people who might have the same thing.

I thought Wing was just there to change currency. And of course send money to your girlfriend.

My Wing account that I opened a long time ago is still working fine, for what it's worth. I've never changed my phone number though, that might have helped.

That sounds like a load of nonsense - Wing has no reason to check your identity on your SIM card & compare it to their record, but they must have your current ID/passport for their own records to comply with NBC regulation. Smart absolutely does not share SIM registration data with other companies, so it is bizarre that whoever it was you spoke to thought these IDs should match. You could conceivably register your SIM with a National ID as a Khmer, and then your Wing account with a passport - these would not match, but they're both you.. bonkers.

Side thought, If you have SmartNas on your phone, you can access the current profile information in the settings, and the profile information there should be sufficient to show your SIM registration over a letter in this day & age if they really want it. If you don't have SmartNas app, get it! :-)

Sounds to me like you just got very unlucky with whichever customer support bod you got that day; if you still have issues drop me a DM & I'll reach out to some former (Wing) & current (Smart) colleagues to try to help. :)

And if anyone is wondering, I know that Spigzy knows what he is talking about. He even left some clues to why.

If Spigzy still used his old Star Wars avatar, it would be another clue...but only us Star Wars nerds would understand.
I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.

If you do have any existing old contacts that are decision makers I guess it would be useful for them to know about this case.

Here is what I learned after going round n round.
There is a code that you can dial on your smartphone and it would display the simcard identification info with your full name and passport number. This is how WING verifies you are the owner of the phone number.
Showing WING the smartNas app with the updated passport information is not enough, they insist that a letter must be provided.
It seems they want to eliminate phone number based accounts like mine and convert it to an official bank account issued under wing.

I have the login credentials for the Wing App, i have the login credentials for the SmartNas app and I am literally holding the phone with the phone number. I guess they literally just wanna make the process as painful as possible.

In the end I gave up and called the sender of the money to cancel the transaction from his end which will take a few more banking days.

I have contacts from Chairman to Cleaners - thanks for sharing, I'll throw it at a few oldies & hope they see that what they're trying to do doesn't make any sense versus the basic banking regulation which simply stipulates some form of government ministry issued photographic ID. I can't imagine they are serious about collecting telco letters for their 1m+ account holders, that'd be mad - particularly as Telcos don't issue such letters to my knowledge & current employer experience.
