Diamond Island’s global trade fairs a catalyst for Cambodian economy

Another low-profile sector is beginning to shine in the Kingdom. Cambodia’s liberal policies to woo foreign investors and its stalwart economy is turning the Kingdom into a key international trade exhibition centre in the region.

The country’s premier venue, the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Center located at Koh Pich, Phnom Penh, hosted 18 major expos in 2017 and 20 last year. At least 24 trade shows are scheduled for this year.

Trade exhibition business is slowly blooming into a sunshine industry in Cambodia.

“Many people are interested in opening their market in Cambodia. They see the economic potentials of Cambodia and 90 per cent of exhibitors are our old clients and they keep coming back because it is profitable,” the convention center’s General Manager Oeung Kean told The Post on Tuesday.

UFI, The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, in its 14th edition Trade Fair Industry in Asia annual report released last August said: “Cambodia was the fastest growing small market with net space sold up by 28 per cent, while India was the fastest growing large market, up 11 per cent from 1.07 million to 1.18 million sqm”.

Phnom Penh has become a favourite destination for European and Asian trade exhibitors, who promote a wide range of products from heavy machinery, automobile, travel and tourism, construction and property development, to fast moving consumer goods, to name a few.

Travel expo to boast 200 exhibitors

This year’s Cambodia Travel Mart, to be held in the capital in October, will attract 6,000 participants from 60 countries, the Minister of Tourism said yesterday during a press conference.

The third edition of the expo will be held in Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel and will boast 200 booths, mainly from Asian and European companies, Minister Thong Khon said.

He said the event brings together local and international buyers, suppliers, trade professionals, and media partners to network and exchange information on the latest tourism developments in the country.

The minister added that it aims to promote Cambodia’s tourism potential to the world by improving commercial relations with international companies.

The expo also helps generate more tour packages that include Cambodia, which ensures the number of tourist arrivals keeps increasing, he said.

“CTM 2019 is the best platform for local and international exhibitors to promote their products and services, network, and find new business opportunities.”

Of all expected 200 booths, local tourism organisations will occupy 42 percent, hotels and resorts 32 percent, travel agencies 14 percent, and airlines 10 percent.

Around 66 percent of participants are expected to come from Asia, 23 percent from Europe, and the rest from North America, Australia, and South America.

Cambodia-Indonesia trade exhibition to be held next month

Cambodia and Indonesia are set to jointly organise a trade exhibition to be held in Siem Reap province next month, an event to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries as well as an effort to boost bilateral trade and investment.

Seang Thay, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, yesterday said that the trade exhibition is set to be held in front of the Royal Palace, along the Siem Reap river bank, on July 19 to 21. The event will boast over 100 booths of more than 100 companies from both countries, showcasing locally-made products as well as providing an opportunity for business matching, he added.

Angkor trade fairs to turn Siem Reap into a major exhibition destination

Two major trade expos, the Angkor Food and Hotel and Angkor Build 2019, return to Cambodia that will add a fillip to the dynamic domestic hospitality and construction sectors.

Both the sectors are on the roll, largely propelled by the vibrant economic growth of the Kingdom which is growing at about seven per cent annually and increasingly becoming an attractive market for foreign and local investors.

This year, the touristic Siem Reap will play host to both the events to be held concurrently at the Sokha Resort and Convention Centre from October 10-12.

Industrial exhibition to be held in August

The Kingdom is set to jointly hold its 8th Cambodia International Machinery Industry Fair and 8th Cambodia International Textile & Garment Industry Exhibition next month, said a press release on Monday.

The event, which will exhibit new technologies in the industrial sector, will be held between August 22 and 25 at Koh Pich in Phnom Penh’s Tonle Bassac commune.

The event’s more than 280 booths have been reserved by some 200 companies from 15 countries and regions to showcase their innovative products and solutions, it said.

The booths will be varied in categories, such as plastics, printing, packaging, agriculture, auto parts, automation, hardware and tools, electrical engineering, and of course, textile and garments.

Cambodia to Hold International Event on Jewelry this Week
