Poipet: Cambodia's new boomtown ?

Poipet: From gambling hub to an industrial boomtown
25 October 2017
The town of Poipet, which hosts Cambodia’s main border crossing with Thailand, is located between Siem Reap and Battambang and has gained its popularity as a cross-border gambling destination.
Because most forms of gambling are banned in Thailand, for years the casinos just across the border in Poipet have been full of Thais trying their luck.

However, government plans are now in action to turn Poipet into an industrial zone. It is believed that due to this – and the town’s convenient proximity to Thailand – that investors will seek opportunities to invest in the town’s manufacturing sector.

Already infrastructure improvements are nearing completion, such as the railway link between Phnom Penh and Bangkok, via Poipet, and that has encouraged many to move to the town to pursue employment opportunities.
Once this railway link is completed, border trade between the two nations is expected to increase substantially...

I mentioned this back in may when i spent 3 day there with gf family.
What they dont say is most of the 100's of shop houses, condos are empty and not nearly enough tourists to support 14 casinos.
Land prices have doubled in the past 18 months.

They even have a pizza company. :-)

I hear border towns are notorious for smuggling and the like.

Kind of alright, though, if you don't need the glitz and glamor of the big city.

Better have a home entertainment system and buddies over for BBQ, because there isn't a Major Cinema for hundreds and hundreds of kilometers.

Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.

Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

Sure there is, right over the border :-)

Well, OK, not so bad.

Real, decent traditional massages, too.

I love that train ... Hope it all connects together soon, then we can catapult into the future in a 1996 jacked up Camry on springs, like in "Back to the Future III" with Clare and Emmett.

"Emmett!! Emmett!"

Sihanoukville is not the only city 'benefiting' from the Chinese boom.

Border town on fast track for development
2 February 2018
The imminent completion of a rail link between Thailand and Cambodia and the opening of two new international border crossings have renewed prospects for commercial growth in Poipet and pushed up real estate prices.

Poipet’s image as a rough-and-tumble casino town is slowly giving way to its development as a vibrant commercial and industrial centre. Often only glimpsed from passing vehicles, the northwestern border town is larger than it appears, with a population of 100,000 and development spread out over 262 square kilometres – an area about a third the size of Phnom Penh.

While casinos are the most visible aspect of its economy, commerce and industry are driving the latest boom in development. Real estate experts attribute four key ingredients to a recent flurry of construction: a nearly completed railway link to Thailand, the government’s plans to open more border crossings, an influx of foreign investment, and a new Chinese-funded belt road along the Cambodian-Thai border.

Sear Chailin, CEO of CL Realty, said Poipet occupies the main trade route between Cambodia and Thailand and is the country’s busiest border crossing for both domestic and foreign tourists. He said Asean integration has lifted tariffs and cross-border trade is thriving, bringing new economic prosperity to the city. It has also attracted industries, with new factories clustered in three special economic zones (SEZs) that lie just north of National Road 5...

Poipet SEZ signs first lease to Japan firm
12 April 2018
Japanese firm Sumitronics signed a lease to become the first tenant at the Poipet Special Economic Zone, which was established as a subsidiary of the publicly listed Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ) in 2014.

The electronics firm leased a 1-hectare plot of land in the zone, moving its manufacturing operation 8 kilometres outside the border town of Poipet in Banteay Meanchey province, where it had been located since 2016.

“This is a historical agreement for us and a milestone,” said Hiroshi Uematsu, CEO of the PPSEZ, in a press release. “We expect more companies to set up their operations at Poipet PPSEZ in the near future.”

Poipet real estate market full steam ahead
27 April 2018
The reopening of a 48-kilometre rail line between Poipet and Serey Sophorn in Banteay Meanchey province this month was a milestone in the long-delayed plan to restore passenger and commercial train service along the Northern Line that connects Poipet to the capital. But it is also a huge boost to the local economy, expected to reduce transport costs and facilitate trade, and which is having a palpable impact on real estate prices in the cities it connects.

San Sean Ho, governor of Poipet city and a local real estate developer, said he expects the railway to improve livelihoods and accelerate commercial growth.

“The reopening of railway link between Poipet and Serey Sophorn will reduce people’s travelling cost and traffic accidents, and at the same time help expand trade and investment in the city,” he said. “The real estate sector, in particular, will benefit from the city’s expanded trade and investment, especially with Thailand when there is influx of people coming to work in the city and seeking accommodation.”

He added that his office was prioritising infrastructure projects in the city to support an ongoing property boom. All roads in the city are being repaired and new circles are in the plan to turn Poipet into a beautiful city.

The city currently has 10 borey (gated residential community) projects and at least 50 companies sub-dividing residential plots for resale.
